I brewed my first batch of beer three weeks ago; it is in a carboy settling out now. I want to brew again in a few days, so here is my question....

Just about everything that I cleaned and sanitized after brewing was scrubbed with some sort of brush or sponge. Everything but my siphon hoses. I soaked them in bleach water and rinsed them out, which when I brew next time I will also sanitize and rinse, but is this enough? I let them air dry, but I still can see spots. It just seems that it takes awhile to dry, which could lead to bacteria contamination. Am I over-reacting and being to much of a neat freak, or is this a potential problem?

Also, how many batches of brew do you do until you toss out the tubing and purchase more?

Thanks in advance.

That is about what I do.

I change mine when they appear to be dirty after the soak. It is not a set time process for me, but a visual inspection decision.

After three years or so of using the same tubing, I bought a tubing brush. I've only used it twice, I think. Once for the last keg I cleaned and once for my transfer tubing. It usually gets a good rinsing after use, then it gets rinsed and sanitized before the next use. And I bought a smaller brush that fits my racking cane and I wanted to check last time I was at the LHBS for one that fit the large part of the autosiphon, but I forgot. So don't sweat the water spots, they won't hurt anything, but do make sure there's no organic debris (yeast, hops, trub, whatever) in the tubing after use and rinse with clean water.

I have a bucket of sanitiser sitting beside me during all complicated brewing procedures, so I can just dunk equipment if I screw up the order and have to expose it to contamination. It also helps when you have to use your hands for something, so that you know you're not taking any risks. Stick a sign on my back and call me paranoid...
