View Full Version : Need Help With Kegerator

I recently purchased a kegerator and I am very happy with it. However, over the past few days I have found that the first pull yields a head that is about 2 inches and the second one (immediately following the first) barely has a head. Glasses are not washed with regular soap and are kept frozen (there was never a problem with the frozen glasses before). If there is a 15-20 minute wait between fill-ups, the same thing happens.

Fridge temp is about 37 deg. and pressure was at 9. I increased it to 11 and still there is no change.

The keg is still the first one and it has been in the box for about 2 weeks.

Any suggestions?? I've looked in the troubleshooting guide and the beer doesn't really match any of the descriptions (wild, flat, sour, etc.)

Thanks

How long are your beer lines? What is the ID?

How far is it from the fridge to the tap? It sounds like maybe the beer in the line is warming up. Warm beer will be foamy. On the second draw, the line might be cooled off again. What size beer line have you got. I've seen this happen with even short 1/4" ID beer lines running up into a tower right above the fridge. Maybe try a 3/16" ID beer line to cut down the amount of beer in the line, and increase the pressure a little to compensate. Or insulate the line, or force cold air into your tower.

(OK, honestly. who else cringed when they read the "frozen glass" part?)

Don't you like the taste of beer? why do you kill it by freezing it?

Danno,

I do like the taste of beer and over the years have found that there is no difference in taste. To me, there is nothing like a cold beer in a frosted glass. It is a matter of what one likes. However, there are times when I would never dream of using a frosted glass (when I drink my Guinness) so you can rest easy!!

My problem, as described in my post, occurs with both frozen and unfrozen glasses.

I will be getting smaller diameter tubing to see if that solved the problem.

i live in Sacramento, land of 100 degree summers, and trust me, nothing beats an ice cold beer when its that freakin hot. i dont always use frosty mugs, but some days it just hits the spot!

If you are using a tower system the foam is just from the beer in the line running out of your fridge getting warm. If you are alway pouring two or 3 beers and then waiting maybe you could get a cheap pitcher to pour the 2 or 3 beers into and then spread the foam out evenly. If you can find a way to blow cold air from the fridge into tower you should notice this problem going away.

Jack,
I used air conditioning insulation to solve my problem. I wrapped it around the line and fed it into the tower and the kegerator. If you would like to stop over (I am down the street from you in Lakeside) let me know and I will show you what I have done. I may even have a piece if that foam for you.

Thanks for everyones suggestions! I am going to probably implement most of them!! Would a near empty keg cause that?? I went to check on the status today and got half a pitcher then came up dry!

Scott- Are you across from Bill?? Yes, I would like to see what you did. That may help!

Again, thanks to all!
