I don't care whether I'm alone or not. When I want to drink beer, I drink it. I'm about to try my first india pale ale tonight. I keep hearing a lot of talk about it, so I thought I'd give it a try.

Hi Steveh, it'll be McEwans (I think I spelled it right). I've drunk pale ales, brown ales, stout, scottish ales, but never tried an IPA. I just bought the one bottle of McEwans, along with a bottle each of several other kinds of beer, just to try some new stuff.

Sounds like somebody is trying to find a friend to the 12-step program meeting ;) What is wrong with drinking alone? If I have a beer or two while doing HW in my dorm while no one is there does that make me an alcoholic??!?! Oh no! I better call AA!!! Please. If you need booze to talk to people, relax, deal with life: call yourself in because you gotta problem. If you like to drink some fine brew alone or with company because you like to drink fine brew, DRINK ON! Now, back to my beer...

Let us know what you thought of the McEwans. India Pale ale was a style that originated in England. They would ship beer to their troops in India and add extra hops to the barrels to help peserve the beer during the long sea voyage. The men got used to it and began requesting it when they returned home. Being a bit of a hophead, it is my favorite style of beer. There are many, many good IPAs across the country. Watch out for the West Coast versions as they really add the hops! Stone brewing has a couple of massively hopped beers. Burt Grant thought you could never have enough hops or so he said at a tasting that I attended several years ago. Some go as high as 45 IBU's (international bittering units). Garrett Oliver of Brooklyn Brewing has done much to revive this style and is a recognized expert. Even in England. So I recommend that you try several from different breweries both English and American and let us know what you think.

Don't forget that they brewed it stronger to keep longer as well. So, best of both worlds - hops and malts.
Yes, Drinkman - let us know how you like the McEwan's - I don't think I've ever tried it. Other than Bass (it used to be labeled IPA in the U.S. a few years ago, don't know when they removed the tag-line from the label), Young's is the only English IPA I've ever tried - it seems more mellow than the U.S. variety.

My first IPA was from the Uinta Brewing Co. here in Salt Lake, since the alcohol content is regulated by the church, they have to compensate by adding flavor.
This is one serious IPA, it's a beautiful orange color, they use Challenger hops and they give it a very specific floral aroma and taste, but the kicker is the "hop assault" that you get!!! WOW...
It's like someone comes up behind you with the "Hop Bat" and smacks you in the back of the head!!!
The finish lasts forever and is fantastic. I really like this beer.
My wife is a bit undecided, it's really a mood thing for her.
Also it's really good to find a place that you can compare the bottled vs draft, the differences are really interesting.
I liked this so much that I brewed my own, but I don't expect it to be anywhere close to that one..

nothings wrong with drinking alone, i do it all the time, freely by choice. there are people who drink in the closet(alone in hiding) because they don't want any one to know they're drinking, that i think is a problem. im sitting here (alone) with my first spam adams triple bock. there is no carbonation? is it suppose to be like that? has anyone tried this stuff before? it has a really pungent smell and taste like old coffee? i think i'll just chalk this one up as a bad bottle. well.......guess there's only one thing for me to do, get started on the chimay triple :D
cheers

Thanks for asking, folks, I did enjoy the McEwan's. The only thing I didn't like about it is it didn't form much head at all. Thanks to the advice from Chazwicke, I'll try some others. The place where I do my buying has a pretty good selection of imports and microbrews. Didn't know Bass used to be labeled an IPA, Steveh. I drink Bass regularly, and I think the McEwans is stronger and heavier. You would probably like it.
Fast Eddy, I'm with you. Only drink if the day ends in a "Y".
Cheers, all.
