Far and away my favorite Young's beer is their SLA - hey chazzy where or what is RFD?

RFD = Regional Food and Drink. It is one of DC's best beer venues. Owned by Dave and Diane Alexander of Brickskeller fame. This show sounds great as I'm still pining for those cask ales I was drinking a little over a week ago in London.

What beer is he bringing over? I won't be there but maybe I'll pop into a Young's house and have a pint in joint celebration.

Myself I prefer their ordinary bitter to their special, but I expect you'll get the special.

And I can just imagine the looks on the faces of those whose experience of Young's had so far been restricted to their canned offerings!

We get the bottles (not BCA as I'm sure you know) and some keg Young's over here, mostly the SLA and Ramrod. Not bad on keg, but it's hard to enjoy it completely knowing what their beers are like on cask.

Several of my friends agree with you in the Ord'nry v. Spesh debate. The only thing I can say is "no one is a hypocrite in their pleasure". Make mine a Spesh.

Last I heard, he's bringing a cask of Old Nick. This is big news, because it's the first time Nick has been available on cask anywhere in the world -- outside of Wandsworth, that is. Contrary to earlier rumors, Ken won't be bringing the cask SLA. Too bad -- I had it at London Drinker in March and it was magic.

I've toured the Ram Brewery with Ken and it was an amazing experience. This should be well worth the $30.

I just recieved and email which contained the following info on the Youngs beers:

My apologies ladies and gentlemen. There is only one cask of Young's being
flown over to the States and it is going to the Old Dominion Beer Festival.
Ken Don is going to do a seminar on real ale and tap the cask then. We tried
to work out the logistics to get casks for RFD and Max's but it just
couldn't happen. Young's does not have a cask program like importer B.
United does, so the logistics were just too difficult. Please stop by the
ODBF on Saturday to try some Special London on cask. Wed at Max's and Thurs
at RFD should still be incredible events. I am writing a bio on Ken Don
right now that will be posted shortly. This guy is one of the most respected
brewers in the world...
Cheers,
Jeff Wells

Ken Don faxed me his bio from London. It didn't come through that well so
here is what I could gather...
I'm sure Tom C. and Jim D. could fill-in or correct when needed...

Ken Don started his brewing career on August 1st, 1963 as a pupil brewer at
the Skol Lager brewery in his hometown of Aruora, Scotland. A 4 year
studyship ended in a BSC in brewing from Herriot-Watt University.
Herirot-Watt was granted university status that year and due to alphabetical
order Ken was the first person to be granted a brewing degree at the
world-renowned university.
Ken's career developed with a spell as a shift brewer at Benskins Brewery in
Watford, Project brewer at Indcoope an Burton and Technical Manager at
Tetley's in Warrengton. In 1977 he returned to Burton as Brewing Technical
Manager, at the time the brewery was producing 1.5 million barells per year.
Ken left in late December 1979 to join Young's as head brewer in January
1980-at the time, Ken was the youngest head brewer to ever be appointed.
Over the last 25 years Young's has completely renovated it's brewing and
packaging operation while retaining it's passion for heritage and tradition.
During this time, Young's beers have won awards in various competitions.
The accomplishments are 27 medals in the Brewing Industry International
Awards including 2 Lager Championships, 1 Keg Ale Championship, 1 Specialty
Beer Championship(Chocolate Stout) and 1 Cask Beer Championship with Winter
Warmer. No other brewery has been so successful in this competition.

I hope some of you can get to meet this legend in the brewing industry..
Jeff Wells

I may be out of town at the beach the weekend of the Old Dominion Fest. I'd hate to miss it.

Further update from Dave Alexander:

A quick update on the Youngs Tasting.
PRICES SLASHED!
We must CRAZY!
Ticket price for the Young's Beer Tasting has been reduced to $28!
Unfortunately, try as we might the cask was unattainable. Fortunately since I now do not have the burden of that considerable expense neither do you! Always the leader in price ungougeability we are proud to lower our price to the standard $28. Those of you in the cheap seats may now applaud, those in the front boxes feel free to rattle your jewelry. We do not run our charges until after the event, so those already purchasing tickets remain ungouged. In addition to the honor of hearing Mr Don speak of his considerable experiences in the brewing industry we will taste 8 great beers from the Young's lineup, at least half from keg.

Here's a rundown on the event.

Thursday June 24th at D.A.'s RFD we are proud to welcome first timer to DC England's famous YOUNG'S Brewery brewmaster Ken Don. This is one not to miss. To order your tickets call 202-289-2030. Ticket price is $28 for this event. One night only, it is sure to sell out, don't wait to get your tickets!! Doors open at 6, we never start at 7. D.A.'s is located at 810 7th St NW, a block above the MCI Center and about 50 yards from the beautifully remodeled Gallery Place/Chinatown Metro.

Me and the missus are going....despite the sad loss of said cask. Be glad to join you....don't feel you have to bathe on our account!

Chaz was a pleasure to meet you, your son and of course Kalleh from Chicago. The next round's on me!

I'm going to purchase a couple tickets today. Hopefully I'll be able to make it. Sounds like a good event. Likewise on meeting. I enjoyed myself and it was very nice meeting you and Kalleh.

Chaz, when you order your tix see if you can get us all put together.

BTW I was extremely dissappointed in the lack of cask is it was my primary motivation for going. Do get me wrong I like the bottled and kegged Young's fine, but the promise of Ordn'ry or Spesh was too much.

I'm going to have to bail on this one. I called and cancelled yesterday.....Must watch the England v Portugal quarter final instead! I'll score some Youngs to sip as I watch the game.

I have reservations still but as to actually making it down there is still up in the air. How was the Portland trip? Are you still going Meridian?

Unfortunately I'm in the same boat. I'd try to get out of it but I've been hosting the whole tournament. I'd have a revolt on my hands if I didn't show up to let people in. And me be of Irish & Scottish extraction!*

Damn the timing.

This whole summer is starting to turn out like this. I think there's three important things to do ever weekend from here till August.

BTW Theaks, are you going up to see the 'Tic v. Man Utd game in Philly on July 28?

K.

*This is the first tournament ever where I haven't rooted against Inger-lund. :)

Well as of late Wednesday, I'm still planning on going (Even though they are not getting that cask). I'll take one for the team. :) I'll be beaching it this weekend so I'll not make the Old Dominion Festival. Either of you guys going?

I will be attending with Designated Driver in tow!

For the OD I wasn't able to get a Designated driver. For some reason a beer festival doesn't seem to appeal to the sober. I thought about cycling but as I haven't ridden a bike in about 20 years, I figured a 70 mile round trip with a load of ale thrown in would not be my best start. And it's a bit too far to run!
Any way enjoy the Youngs and hte beach Chaz. And MFC - enjoy the match and the OD!!!!

Thanks! I was telling someone about the new DaVinci Diet that allows bread. And I made the point that beer is liquid bread. Well the next thing I know he sends me an email with two of those guys one drinking "white bread" and one drinking "dark bread". So I figured I'd put one to use. Glad that you like it. I have no idea where he got it. I like the nonic glass. It must be an Imperial Pint! A nice dark mild.
