Samuel Smith Old Brewery (Tadcaster) North Yorkshire, England. 12 oz (Merchant Du Vin's doing, no doubt) clear bottle. 5.0 ABV.

Clear, deep copper brown with a very thin, filmy tan head.

Caramel, butterscotch/toffee nose. Coffee, chocolate, and dark fruit aromas back.

Caramel, toffee flavor with faint licorice notes. Light bittering hops back with a mellow toffee finish.

Medium body with a slick, syrupy mouth feel.

Overall complex, rich, malty brew - what to expect from a brown ale.

I've only ever had the chance to try this once and I think I got a bottle that had been stored on its side. It was very tinny and this masked any good characteristics it may have had.

I'd love to be able to find more brown ales, as the style really appeals to me. I even like a pint of Newcastle Brown when it gets too hot for malty cask ales in the summer.
