View Full Version : Mojo IPA

I tried the Mojo IPA tonight. I didn't like it as much as I would've hoped:
The Mojo IPA pours a straw color with tons of large particulates floating around (esp. the second half of the 22 - probably the most I've seen in a beer so far). It has a large, pillowy, white head that goes down to a bubbly film that laces the glass.
Its aroma is strong spicy, piney hops with some malt and citrus underneath.
Its taste is a whole lotta hops with a very strong, bitter finish (a little too much so). It's a little metallic initially, and the mouthfeel is on the thin side.
Overall, an OK IPA. I think was a little too one sided (all hops) and prefer better balanced IPAs (Stone, Avery, Victory).

Let me preface by saying that I have never tried stone, avery, or victory.
I liked the mojo. I thought it had a little more malt character than most IPAs I've tried, and I like that. The citrus in the hops really comes out in this beer, and I like that too.
I didn't get any of the metallic taste, and I didn't see any floaties. Though I had a 12 oz.

Who makes it? Citrussy hops? Amarillo?

Bruno, Don't they sell Stone, Victory or Avery products in your neck of the woods?

It's made by Rockies Brewing. It's part of their "looking glass" series which also includes their Never Summer ale, among others.
Their site says amarillo. I didn't know that until just now. I think I like them.
And yes, they do sell those, I just haven't tried them.

We get Stone and Avery products here (Avery and Rockies Brewing are both Boulder beers). No Victory.
I had the Avery IPA once before, and I don't recall being knocked out by it - some of these IPAs just end up tasting like hopwater. If all you want to taste is the hops, why bother putting malt into it at all? Just dump an airline-sized bottle of gin into your your carbonated hopwater and you're all set.

This is an oddly resurrected thread...did Beaver really add the first post last May?
Here (http://www.realbeer.com/discussions/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4922&highlight=Mojo) are my notes from last October - sorry that I didn't add them in this thread.

I'll have to look for the Mojo. I'm up for those Amarillo hops. We used to get Boulder beers here back in the 80s. can't recall seeing them lately.

Yeah, I had to search for this thread to post my thoughts.

Amarillo hops will impart a strong grapefruit / citrus character, a lot more so than Cascade. Also Bruno, you owe it to yourself to at least try some beers from Stone, Victory, and Avery. IMO they produce some of the best beers available on the market today, particularly IPAs.

I was suprised to see he had not tried any of them. All three breweries make some excellent beers.

I have access to Victory and Stones but not Avery, never had anything by them. I saw the Mojo the other day and was going to try but wasn't sure of it. I didn't want to commit to a full sixer. The Blue Point Brewery right here in my town makes a Ipa called Hoptical Illusion with amarillo that is so incredible that I haven't met anyone who didn't like it. You can definetly taste the grapefruit and citrus qualities, especially when they had it on cask.

I'll try the stone, and victory and avery beers eventually. But they're all so readily available, I'd rather try seasonals.

How does this compare to Hazed and Infused??

I've only had the H&I once, and I didn't take any notes on it.
Sorry.

No problem, Bruno :) ...anybody?

I'll have to try the Mojo for myself at some point... but the H&I is a really nice medium pale ale that is dry hopped, and it has the flavor of fresh hops - it's almost a green flavor (not green in the sense that they're not ready to be used yet). Don't know if that helps or not...

Their beer is sounding better and better to me.

I have had the H&I and loved it! I took some on an overnight trip and was stuck in a hotel room with nothing but the little plastic cups from the bathroom. Even at that, the head stayed right to the last sip and left a perfect lacing on the side of the "glass"; wonderfully fresh hop flavor...I know the "green" you speak of.
I was wondering how the mojo compared...that one I have not tasted.

It's the sort of green where you can see the hop in your mind as you're tasting the beer; you swear there's got to be at least one cone floating in your glass somewhere! Maybe it's underneath that big white head.... :)

OK - finally got to have one! Here goes:
12 oz. bottle.
Pours a golden copper with a semi-firm white head that does a good job of sticking around.
Nose is hops, hops, and more hops. Malt is there but only as an afterthought.
Taste: Hops certainly dominate, as you'd expect in a good IPA. Very similar to the Hazed & Infused, save for that you can taste how fresh the hops are in the H&I. Nothing wrong with this hop flavor, though. Malt is less of an "also ran" than it is a good sidekick. Lacing is still present in my empty glass 20 minutes later.
It's a nice IPA, and somehow it gives me perspective on my own homebrew experience from last year. Suddenly I like my beer better than I did before. But this is a very good, albeit middle of the road, IPA. Good stuff!
