beer in philly?

looks i will be heading to philadelphia this week, and am wondering if anyone knows of some good spots for beer around downtown philly.

Also im interested in any beers from the area i may not be familiar with in chicago--though i do remember correctly that in PA you cant buy beer in six packs but only cases? if that's true i probably wont be bringing much home.

There's plenty of good beer in and around Philly. I don't know all of the spots, but here's a couple of brewpubs and Belgian bars in and around Center City. There's a lot more than this...

Independence Brewpub. Right near convention center in Reading Terminal. Kind of upscale feel, but I think the beer is pretty decent and they have a decent happy hour.

Nodding Head is another brepub within walking distance of Independence. Great Beers, cool pub. I hear the food is good here, too.

Monks is a must for Belgians. The bar in the back has different tap offerings than the one in the front room. Good frites, too.

Eulogy is a newer Belgian bar, but I haven't been to it. I've heard mixed reviews..

Then there's the suburbs with close to a dozen other brewpubs, including Victory, Iron Hill (3 locations in PA) McKenzie's, and more!

You're right about the beer sales, but there are some stores that can sell singles (at a premium price, though), I think. Maybe a PA local can clear that up...

I hear The Foodery is a great place to pick up singles (beers, not women....well, maybe a beer-loving woman) in Philly. Never been myself but it gets rave reviews on BA.

awesome, thanks guys. Im probably heading out Wednesday and will try to fit in a dinner at Monks and lunch at one of the brew pubs, and may try to swing by for bottles as well. too bad bottled beer cant be expensed.

i was just looking over the beers offered at Monks (http://radoran.dca.net/monksbackbar.cfm) --holy crap that looks like a fun time. im already plotting what to drink and wishing i had another dinner opportunity there.

edit: Argh, no philly this week, but maybe next week. i hope the phillies will still be in town.
