So I got this situation.

My housemate is a bartender. As a generous bonus for some fine bartending, the owner has donated a keg of Yuengling to our house. (He's actually just trying to move it out to make room for some new beers).

The problem is that apparently, as it has been explained to me, Yuengling does not distribute mass quantities (like kegs) of their beer to the public. Thus their kegs are unique in the way they must be tapped, i.e. with a special device that allows a CO2 tank to be connected via a hose and blah blah etc. The point being that ordinary pump taps will not work.

We have that device, but what can we now do short of getting a CO2 tank? Are there any pump taps available that would work and how could I obtain one? Other options?

well, if it's full, it's gotta have some sort of opening, right? There are about 5-6 different types of taps. Sanke is used by most domestic breweries. That's probably what you're used to seeing, it's the tap used by Bud, Miller, etc.... The second most likely possibility is that it's a Hoff-Stevens type tap, which has two prongs instead of a ball. If that's what you have, I've seen hand pumps for Hoff-Stevens on ebay. Or, local liquor stores that call a big selection should also have them on hand. The rest are all european taps, so you probably don't have to worry about them...

So, bottom line, an ordinary pump tap will work, you just have to find the correct one.

The reason one uses co2 to pump beer instead of a hand pump is that once you start hand pumping, you're introducing air to your keg, and you only have a few days before the beer gets oxidized. Use co2, and the keg would be good for months. I'll make the assumption here that this won't be an issue for you... :D

man a whole keg of Yuengling? You're in heaven man!!!

I can't get the stuff in TN, where I go to school, or Cincinnati OH, where I am working right now. It's one of my favorite "cheap" (compared to what I usually drink) beers.

Anytime I hear of one of my friends/co-workers driving through PA/NJ I make them stop and get me a case.

Can't help you with the tap situation as my experience is only with the regular-style taps, but I just wanted to congratulate you on a keg of fine beer.

Slainte!

Thanks for the responses.

Yeah, we did indeed find the correct tap online and it should be on its way. The party had to be postponed for a bit for many reasons but just yesterday we got the keg in a fridge, just in time for the rapidly changing weather. (we've been keeping it on ice).
