I was wondering if anybody in here has had the chance to visit the Rouge Brewery in Newport. I got to visit about a month ago the last time I went to the coast. You've probably heard of some of their beers, Dead Guy Ale is their most popular. I tried the Younger's Special Bitter on tap while I was there, and it was amazing! Any other good brewery's around the NW I should try out? I haven't had the chance to go anywhere else yet.

If Portland Brewing is still around, they used to make a Haystack Black Porter that I had dreams about.... :D

Portland Brewery is still around. My favorite Black Porter is Deschutes, but I'll have to make it up there and try theirs, thanks for the info.

I love Rogue. I spent a week in Newport last summer and went to the brewery everyday. Im pretty stoked they opened a tap room in SF so now I dont have to drive all the way to OR to go have Rogue on tap.

Isn't the owner of Rogue also the owner of Starbucks? Or am I confusing another brewery?

I have never heard that before, but I think they both have a star in their logo, so it could be, but I'm not one to assume.

Rogue and Starbucks are in no way connected.

If your in the Portland area, you should check out: Laurelwood, Alameda Brewhouse, New Old Lompoc/Hedge House, Rogue Public House, and Bridgeport Brewhouse, at the minimum. In the way of great bars, check out the Horsebrass Pub, the Rose and Raindrop, and the County Cork. They all have fabulous in house brews or an incredible tap list. (If you want specifics on any of them, message me.)

Pelican Brewery and Pub on the coast is fantastic, even during the remodel. Terminal Gravity, in Enterprise, has and incredible IPA and Porter. Across the Columbia, in Stevenson, Washington, is Walking Man........Homo Erectus IIPA is great,As is the Black Cherry Stout ( atl least I think that's the name).
Basically...........pick a direction in Oregon.
Or cross the border into Washington and your on a whole new hunt!!
The possibilities are endless. I've been here for 3 years and I'm just getting started!

Didn't Redhook make (or maybe they still do) a stout with Starbucks coffee?

I think that was pyramid. It's mentioned in Michael Jackson's book on 500 classic beers.

Hmm. I'm almost positive it was the Red Hook Blackhook porter, but a quick perusal of their site shows that, while the Blackhook is still being made, there are no signs of a Starbucks emblem on the label anymore. I'm operating on a roughly 95% certainty here, so I'm assuming their contract with Starbucks just ran out (it does state that it has a coffee taste, but doesn't list coffee as an ingredient). On the plus side I found out they have a Blackhook Nitro now, which I'll have to hunt down.

No hits on the Pyramid website, unfortunately, so for now I guess this mystery remains unresolved.

Yep! It has since been retired.

I heard that Starbucks wanted too much $$$$ for them to continue, however on redhooks website they list a different reason:

Sadly, Doubleblack Stout was retired in January of 2002 because demand for the beer dropped to levels where commercial production was no longer viable. We have secured the recipe in the brewers' vault in hopes that one day Doubleblack will rise like a phoenix from the ashes of brewing history to once again slake the thirsts of stout fans from sea to shining sea.

Probably the best Redhook beer ever brewed... LOL.

This is the one I was thinking of, but checking michael jackson's book right now he says there's no coffee in it.

This is the one you are thinking of

http://www.ratebeer.com/Ratings/Beer/Beer-Ratings.asp?BeerID=665

on the redhook web page it mentions that this beer is discontinued.

I am still convinced that the founder of Starbucks was also the founder of one of those breweries too.

Yes, one cofounder of Starbucks (Gordon Bowker) was involved in the creation of Redhook.

Thanks again Bill,
I have actually been to Stevenson, WA before. I wish I would have known that there was a good brewery close by. I am going to use that map to go there next weekend hopefully, that was very helpful.

Nathan,
I was at Rogue last week. I did a 6 day tour through Oregon. It was awesome. Absolutely incredible. Rogue offers a beer and bed deal too. So stay at Rogue. Everyone was great.

Selection on tap was sensationale. The Chipolte Ale is definitely a one of a kind. Be sure to take the Deep Sea Fishing Trip across the street.

Newport is a great town and its personality is all Rogue.

Have a great trip.

Did any of you guys see the results of England's bi-annual Brewing Industry International Awards? Rouge won Medals for their American Amber Ale, as well as their Shakespere Stout. This is pretty high recognition, there was only one other brewery in the US that won two medals.

Rogue has some outstanding establishments in the Pacific NW. I've been through Newport and stayed at the Rogue Bed and Beer, ate and drank at the pub downstairs, and then the next day we visited their production brewery across the bay. While there we took a brief tour of the brewery and the bottling line, then had beers and lunch upstairs at the pub restaurant. The nitro Shakespeare stout sticks out in my memory - what a great brew.
Back in the day I had visited their original pub and brewery in Ashland, that is before it washed away in the great flood. I've also spent time in Rogue's Portland pub, and visited their small brewpub up in Issaquah, Washington. Each place was different, but the food and drink were top notch. Now if I could just get to their new pub in San Francisco...

Ok, I made it up to the Walking Man Pub today.
Great little place, doesn't open until 4pm, but it's a great place.
10 beers on tap. Imperial IPA, IPA, Oatmeal Stout, ....should I go on? If you have a chance..........go..............period!!!!!!!!!!
Great little garden outside...........nothing but enjoyment!
I encourage you all to go.
Cheers,
Bill
