Who is attending the 2004 Big Brew competition this Saturday?
Which of the 3 competition recipes will you brew? How many gallons?
Let everyone know how your group/community/town or state did.

Congratulations to site #135, the Keg Ran Out Club's (KROC) Big Brew-In held in Broomfield, Co, the winners of the 2003 big brew contest drawing.

Big Brew Irish Red Ale Extract
4.25 lb Briess Golden Light Dry Malt Extract
1.0 lb Briess 10L Caramel Malt
3 oz Briess Extra Special Malt
2 oz Briess Roasted Barley
0.5 lbs. Honey
2.0 oz E.K. Goldings, 4.75% alpha acid (60 minutes)
0.5 oz E.K. Goldings, 4.75% alpha acid (15 minutes)
White Labs WLP004 Irish Ale or Wyeast 1084 Irish Ale Yeast
Unfortunately my supplier was out of WLP004 so I settled with an Edinburgh Ale (WLP028).
O.G.: 1.050 - IBU: 22

It was a tough decision between this and the Hop Juice Double IPA. I think I'll save that one for the Brew Day in the Fall.

I'm gonna give the imperial IPA a try. All grain, 5 gallons.

What's the deal with this. I read the article but didn't really get it. When do you brew the beer if you're toasting at noon? (This may be a stupid question as I know very little about home brewing) It just always seemed like it takes more time than that.

BTW I'd do the hopjuice!

IPAFanatic, the toast is at noon but doesn't involve the beer that gets brewed that morning. That's just an excuse to hang around, sample other home brews and hopefully introduce others to the obsession.

To a Scottish Red.
My homebrew shop ran out of the White Labs WLP004 Irish Ale so I ended up using the Edinburgh Ale (WLP028). Does that make it a Scottish Red?
The other changes made were adding a half pound of the extract (rather than leaving it with my equipment on a hot sweaty day) along with 0.5 oz. of hops (last 5 minutes of boil) for the same reason as above.
What seemed to be strange to me was that my 5 gallons with all of the extras added above and 1 quart of yeast starter, at 75 degrees my O.G. was only 1.044.
I thought it would be higher.

176.5 gallons brewed at the west Phoenix (What-Ales-Ya) location.
Anyone else have numbers yet?
