View Full Version : ??? about "super" pubs

OK, I made up the term superpub, as far as I know it doesn't even exist, but what I'm referring to are bars that have at least 50 beers on tap. I'm compiling an informal list of all these pubs in Texas for future use in my travels (ie. I recently had the pleasure of discovering Cricket's in Lubbock this past weekend). Please respond with the ones you know of in your area as well as the approximate number of beers on tap/bottle. Thanks

Of course your area is my area too but I'll contribute The Gingerman in Austin.

In SF there is Toronado Drafts (http://www.toronado.com/draft.htm)

there is a joint called 99 bottles in Santa Cruz. If you go bring your own glassware, these guys cant figure out how to get the soap out of your glass.

Cricket's in Waco, TX. Also, any Flying Saucer anywhere. There is a place in Sherman, TX, called Cellarman's that has 99 beers, but only 30 are on tap.

I can vouch for the Flying Saucer in Raleigh.

Fifty taps? Yikes!
Best we can do in DC area is 40:
RFD Washington (http://www.rfdwashington.com/)
I'd trade all 40 of them for a couple of hand pulled casks.:)

Heh. I used to go to the Molly's in the Woodlands (~48 on tap) and the one in Conroe (~36 on tap). I'll have to track down the one in Galveston next time I'm down that way.

I was trying to figure out how many taps Williams Pub had in Minneapolis and I stumbled on this link. This should give you more information than you needed. Cheers!

In the Denver area, there's the Falling Rock Tap House and a place called the Yardhouse as well. Haven't been to either of them yet, but they're both on the list.

Raliegh has a Flying Saucer, eh?! Good to hear. I was raised in Durham, before the move out the vast frontier when I was twelve. Thing I miss most about the Carolinas, besides trees and proper BBQ (which I do myself these days) are the summer nights at the Durham Bulls games. I used to live just 5 blocks from the old DAP.

I love the Falling Rock. Probably my favorite place in Denver.

Hey, that's awesome! There's a couple of these listings that blow me away:

Long Beach
The Yard House
401 Shoreline Drive, 562-628-0455
250 taps, usually offering between 180 and 190 different beers.

Taco Mac
525 Lake Center Parkway, 770-886-4374
The newest and largest of three Taco Macs (other two are listed next) run by Andy Klubock. A different beer poured from each of 224 taps.

Road trip, anyone?

There is an annual World of Beer festival held in the Durham Bulls stadium every fall. I have been once. It is run by the Bradfords of All About Beer fame. I have relatives in Raleigh so I don't mind an occasional foray down there. The fest is worth going to as well.

I am sure that this is at the "new" DBulls stadium, isn't it?! I might just have to make a trip back that way sometime, just to sample some beer and take in the old neighborhood.

I was just there a couple of weeks ago, and they do have at least 60 on tap, plus a great bottle selection. The food is prison-grade, but who cares...this is the best beer bar within a couple of hours of my house in beer-starved Northwest Ohio.

I didn't get to enjoy Ashleys as much as I should have while I was in Ann Arbor...I wasn't far enough along on my beer journey to appreciate it fully.

That reminds me there's a pub in Portsmouth VA that I've heard great things about. They have over 250 beers, not sure how many are draft. Most are German but there are Belgian, Brits and Micros too:
The Bier Garden (http://www.biergarden.com/)

Sounds like a trip down there may be in order!!

I read about that place on a recent DC Beer posting. It had numerous good reviews and was listed as a "Must Hit" destination when in the Norfolk / VA Beach area. Moreso than the brewpubs down there.

It may not be Texas, but the Blue Tusk in Syracuse has 63 taps. Best part is usally one or two are cask condition from the brewery only about 1 1/2 miles away. so it is very fresh.

Gingerman in Austin, Flying Saucer in several locations and Crickets in Lubbock and Waco are great. I think there may be a Gingerman in Houston...Not sure. Thats like driving to Kansas from where I live, so I dont much. Gingerman in Austin and Flying Saucer in Ft. Worth are my faves.

You know, as much as I am over that way, I have never been to the FS in Ft. Worth.

FS in Fort Worth has around 80 taps I think...Nice feel to the place. Right downtown across from Bass Hall. I think they also have about 200 bottle selection as well.

I was just down there, and on Shoreline of all places - I can't believe I didn't see this place....anyone been there? I stopped at a brewpub on Shoreline across from the hotel we stayed in, but can't remember the name for the life of me.

I'm looking for a place in Houston TX. I live half-way between Galveston and Houston and the only ones I can find are quit a drive away. Anyone know of any on the southside of Houston, but not all the way to Galveston.

Wow. Good to see this thread's still going strong. I've been away for weeks but the good news is in the meantime I've relocated back to Austin after a brief sojourn up north.

As for bars in Houston, the (original) Ginger Man in H-town is actually in Rice Village as opposed to downtown proper. Good draft selection but not as many taps as the one in Austin. The Flying Saucer is smack dab in the middle of downtown Houston and has about 80 beers on tap with a good representation. I finally made it to Crickets in Lubbock while I was up in the "Poonhandle" and was severely disappointed: yes, they do have about 80 beers on tap but they're mostly the same beers you find everywhere else. For instance, instead of being selective about which brews they carry, Crickets appears to carry every flavor from every brewery they can get their hands on. There's an air of desperation about the selection, let's put it that way. Can't speak for the one in Waco.

On my visit to Cellarman's last night, I was suprised at their latest "guest beer," St. Arnold's Summer Pils. This beer is so much better on tap than its bottled version.

You can say that about any of the St Arnolds brand. Especially living in Texas I'm sure a lot of that has to do with the freshness. If you ever get the chance don't hesitate to try the St Arnolds Cask Conditioned.
