Call me goofy, or insane, or whatever, but this combo intrigues me. Has anyone ever had or brewed a beer made with horseradish? My son is doing a report on a spice of his choice for school and chose horseradish. He has read that it was once an ingredient in German beer. How would you add it, whole or juiced or what? Any info would be great.

Where I am from in Western New York horseradish is almost like ketchup as far as being a condiment but I don't know about it in a beer. Hopefully someone with a greater knowledge than I will chime in but if you wanted to try it, I would use it like I would use whole ginger root. Cut up a few pieces and throw it in the last 10-15 minutes of the boil. You could try throwing it in into the secondary, but it being such a hard root I don't know what would happen. I looked on the Cats Meow and The Beer Recipator and couldn't find anything but they were brief searches, give it a try and good luck.

Interesting. My favorite spice is cilantro. I've often thought a pils brewed with a bit of fresh cilantro would make a wonderful compliment to Mexican or Southwestern food durining the summer months.

I know this is an old thread, but believe it or not every now and again I wonder if you guys gave this stuff a try. Any word on the horseradish brew?

No, unfortunately, we have not had the opportunity to get to it yet. My brewing partner and I have had conflicting work schedules, and it just hasn't happened. We still have all intentions on doing it, so I will post or pm you when it gets done.
