Here's an odd experiment: This weekend my girlfriend and I made a batch with harvested yeast from a prior batch and we decided to add a wee bit of yeast to a Malta Goya unfermented malt beverage we had lying around. We then airlocked it and decided to see what would happen. We now have an individual 8 ounce "batch" bubbling away. Curious to see what it'll turn into.... I'll keep you posted as I recall others wondering the same thing.

Man... you should have done a 12oz all-grain batch!

Man.... a 12oz all grain batch..... that would be a little daunting! I figure when I'm done transfering to the secondary, then bottling bucket etc... I'll have to bottle it in a dropper or thimble! Maybe I should dry hop it with a single hop leaf?:D

I have heard of those who use that Malto Goya as base for yeast starter... I dont think there is anything in it and its pasturized I presume.

It is pastuerized. It's basically unfermented wort. I've also heard about using it as a starter. Never tried it myself though. It should certainly ferment into something beerlike.... we'll see.

So... How did this turn out?

I'm gonna crack into it at Big Brew day tomorrow. I'll let you know. It has a wee bit of sediment on the bottom so I assume it did its thing.

So.....???

Have you discovered a new source of good beer?

With all of the hustle and bustle trying to get ready for brew day, I forgot and left it at home. I'll crack into it this afternoon while brewing something else and let you know..... By the way, I brewed the "hop juice" recipe, good Lord, 10 ounces of hops. Insane!!!!

The malta goya/brew experiment was a success. The end result was akin to a porter. Semi-malty, good carbonation, great mocha colored head. Overall, it was pretty good. It lacked sufficient malty flavor and aroma as well as mouthfeel but wasn't bad at all. My next experiment with it will be to use it as a "control" and add different strains of yeast to see their various contributions. Variable fermenting temps would be interesting too.
