I was curious what is a "normal" amount of trub in secondary.... It seems that whenever I rack to secondary within a few hours, no matter how careful I am in racking from primary to secondary, there'll be about a centimeter of trub in the secondary... I was wondering if this is normal, or if I'm not allowing everything to settle out long enough after moving the primary fermenter when getting ready for racking or what...

Thanks

I just checked the blonde ale I transferred a couple of hours ago and I have about half an inch of sediment already so yeah, that sounds about right.

Cool.... I was pretty careful while transferring, and left all the stuff on the bottom and all but just a tad of liquid... I was watching the flow and controlling it so it was a nice slow flow while racking and while I could see some sediment (was in suspension in the beer itself) I didn't think I got a horrible amount in there... Since it is over 90% done and I'll be bottling this upcoming Sunday I figured the little bit of trub that settled out of it wouldn't be a big deal. I actually can't see the trub unless I get on the floor and look at the carboy from floor level. I was very happy tho as I transferred more beer into my secondary today than I had in the past. Just wanted to make sure I didn't do it at the expense of carrying over more than I needed to. I think that everything I brought over was already in suspension and it just settled out shortly after moving it.

The beer itself tastes great... I could've just sat down today with the siphon hose and drank it out of the carboy.

The largest component of what settles out in secondary is yeast.

I have had up to an inch settle out in secondary. As Fast Eddy said, it is mostly yeast.

No worries.
