Ayinger Brewing, Aying, Germany - 17 oz bottle.

Century Celebration Bavarian Lager, Helles Export Beer.

Poured a clear, light yellow to gold color. Lively carbonation produced a thick, white, Pilsner-like head rising above the rim of the glass, then settling to a cragy cap and remaining prominent through the duration of the drink.

Mellow noble hop (Hallertauer?) nose, malts peeking through. The aroma of this beer screams Munich, reminding me of Helles' quaffed in biergartens and bier halls.

Clean, crisp, sweet melanoidin malt flavor with mellow hops following in the aftertaste. The balance of this beer is beautifully sublime.

Medium body, with crisp lagering character and natural carbonation without being fizzy or gassy.

A fine, flavorful Helles in the strict Bavarian brewing sense. Try this beer alongside a Beck's or any of the American Macros and you'll recognize what's missing from the others. My paint store has the Ayinger bottles priced at $1.99, I'm thinking there's a case due for my fridge soon.

You are making me thirsty! Ayinger beers are readily available in my area and I some times over look them. I have sampled many of them in the past and have even been to tastings in the past where they were featured. I think they must be one of Bob Tupper's favorites He has visited the brewery I know. He is a big fan of German beer and Lagers in general. Strange for the creater of Hop Pocket ALE.

I really like the Ayinger beers and often take the for granted. The Jahr Hundert and the Altbairisch Dunkel are my two faves. I was fortunate enough to have some of the beers at a tied house in downtown Munich, though I've never actually been to Aying.

I agree with you, and Chaz, on taking Ayinger for granted - it was pure whim to but the first bottle I had. And damn - didn't realize. I'll have to see if the paint store proprietor will get the Dunkel in stock.

is this the one in the black-colored box (or i guess if you are buying singles, have a black label?) I've been a fan of the ayinger hefeweizen (green packaging) for a little while now and wouldnt mind exploring some of the others.

Unless you're asking about the Dunkel, which does have some black in the label:
