Got a question that I hope isn't too ignorant. I was given a bunch of brewing stuff by a friend, including a CO2 system, and lots of other goodies. I went through the box and came across a couple "wine" hydrometers and a saccarometer. Can the "wine" hydrometer be used for measuring beer as well? I'm assuming its a relative thing and it can but thought I'd ask anyways.

The instructions that I found are all talking about wine.

As far as I know, when making wine you are much more concerned with Ph than with sugar content, maybe you do both, maybe I'm completely full of crap?

My wife wants me to start making wine as well as beer...I thought about telling her that if she wants wine to make it herself, then I remembered how cold it is outside and my dog probably won't give up his house... I don't like wine...I don't want to waste a bunch of time making it that I could be making beer....I don't want to get divorced either...

saccharimeter [ˌsækə'rýmýtə]
noun any instrument for measuring the strength of sugar solutions, esp. a type of polarimeter for determining the concentration from the extent to which the solution rotates the plane of polarized light

Definition stolen from the first decent source I could find on the net...

a hydrometer is the same for beer and wine. It measures the weight of a liquid in relation to water. As you add sugar the numbers after the decimal point will increase so you know what your SG will be. I use the same hydrometer for beer and wine.

Paul, wine is really easy to make if you buy one of the kits. It taste pretty good and it makes the relationship A LOT better. There is nothing better than a tipsy wife from the wine you made.

have fun

I've been making wine from kits for about three years and just recently began brewing beer. I basically used everything from my wine equipment except for the plastic bucket. The hydrometers all measure specific gravity relative to water.

Making wine to keep the wife happy is pretty easy to accomplish. If you can brew beer you can make wine from kits. Its pretty easy but you must have patience young skywalker.

But anyway the equipment is pretty much interchangeable, but please don't boil the wine!
