Life is good. When I first moved here I was having some issues with the paint shops around here. I picked one, even though it seemed like the guy didnt like me and was always giving me attitude when I went in. Oh well he has the best selection. Well I ran into him at a wine event and we talked for a while. I started talking to him about his selection of belgians, which is a very fine selection, and how I would like to become more educated about the beers he carries (many of them I am not familiar with). He told me to come on in and he would hook me up. Even mentioned that he might have a special thing or two in the back that could be had. Very nice! Well I just went down there and he gave me a bottle of Val- Dieu brown. I am going to crack that one open in a bit.
Sometimes it is hard to get that relationship started with your local paint slinger, but it is very cool when it works out. This guy actually seems pretty cool and defiantely way more knowledgable about the belgians than me. Perhaps Ill take him some of my beer as a thanks.
Anyways. I was just excited, figured you guys would be able to appreciate a free beer story even if it was a tad long.
Cheers!

Always good to shmooze the local retailer, and bartender/owner - for that matter. The owner of the local Paint Store knows me by name, is always enthusiastic to let me know what's new on his shelves, asks my advice and review on beers, and yes - floats me a freebie often.
When they see you in the store often, spending your hard-earned money there instead of somewhere else, the smart and good ones appreciate it!
And yeah, bringing him a homebrew will definitely cynch your "preferred customer" status!

Great story! I wish I had a store close by to me. The few stores in the area think Killians is an import. We do have a grocery/drug store with a decent wine selection, but the beer selection is not very exciting.

Another way in addition to bringing them some homebrew is invite them over for a brew day. While they own the store they may not be aware of what brewing/carrying good beer is all about.

ITs the big one on 41st ave, called Forty-First. Its right on the right hand side after you get off the freeway heading towards the mall. Im not sure if he serves your kind there though. I would call ahead first :)

The place you are talking about is Liquid Solutions. They are on Scholls Ferry Rd. in Tigard. I go there when I am in that area. Very nice selection and Matt and his wife are very nice folks. Here is a link to their sight.

I agree it is always good to be on a first name basis with your beer seller or publican. Often some of mine will give free samples of "special" beers they have saved. At the very least they will always save / put aside one of anything rare for when I come in. The Val- Dieu brown is an excellent beer.
