I'm posting this in All-Grain 'cuz temp is more important to AG'ers most of the time.
I just got a new instant read Thermapen from www.thermoworks.com. It rocks - gives temp reading in 2-3 secs. I love it :)
Did you buy the $79 model? I have seen it before on cooking shows and wanted one, but I doubt the wife will go for it with that price tag.

Yes - the $79 model. I grill a lot too so it'll come in handy for more than just beer (well mostly for beer but that's what I like to tell myself).

In case no one noticed - I am completely goofing off at work today. It's good to be the king(or a boss ;) ) I'm gonna leave in like 1.5 hours and go get stuff to brew.

OK, I have a question for you all. I just got my Sabco kegs, I'm going to have a friend weld in the SS nipples for me. I'm still deciding on thermometers, though. I see two options, one, your standard, 3" analog thermometers mounted on another nipple. Two, something like a thermocouple thermomteter (http://www.technika.com/misc/ST-610B_612.htm), dual channel with two probes, is only $108. Since dial thermometers are roughly $30 each, it's not that much more to go the high tech route.
comments?

This is my first experience of thermocouple vs. thermosister. The thermocouple is much faster - and I like speed. I'd go the high tech route.

...but everyone knows the laser thermometer (http://www.morebeer.com/detail.php3?pid=MT420) is where it's at. ;)

Not so.
Laser therm are only good at measuring external surface temps. I can't measure the middle of my mash with one, for instance.

I ordered my AG setup from MoreBeer with a built-in coupler well for a thermometer. How did you manage to take measurements before this?

I used a thermosister digital - it's accurate but takes forever(10-12 secs) to determine the temperature.
On a side note - do you love MoreBeer or what? I'm starting to wonder if you get a kick back for each time you mention them :D

I would suggest anyone thinking of getting a laser thermometer, Don't. There are just too many variables associated with it. Bias inducing variables include: target emissivity (matte vs. gloss), target clarity, battery voltage (laser intensity), photoelectric degredation, etc... This can add up to a +/-40% accuracy error vs range.
I'd suggest staying with the old fashioned thermometers, especially for this application.
Then again, i've been accused of being picky before... :)

Yea, I really should ask about their affiliate program. :p But, no, I'm neither employee, stockholder, or relative thereof.
They do have one of the best selections of solid equipment, however (with the possible exception of the Carboytap), and their ingredients aren't too bad from what I've tasted. If I run across something better, I'll be sure to post it, though. ;-)
