View Full Version : Youngs Double Chocolate Stout

I tried the Double Chocolate Stout tonight. I was a little disappointed, but it was still a fine brew:
The Double Chocolate Stout pours an opaque midnight black with a fizzy brown head that quickly dissipated to a collar and completely disappeared before I finished.
The aroma is kind of yeasty initially settling into malts and a big sweet dark chocolate smell with some vanilla notes.
It has a smooth creamy mouthfeel. The taste is dominated by chocolate. There is a slight metallic bitterness, but the sweetness definitely overwhelms it. A little too out of whack on the sweet side...I would have preferred a little more hops for better balance.
Overall, I think this would make a terrific dessert drink. It's probably not something I'd drink a lot of or frequently though.

He, he, he - sounds like the Hophead personna is taking over! ;)
What container form did you sample Beav; widget can, or plain ol' 16 oz bottle? Since you said that the head thinned, I'm guessing it was the bottle. Many around here prefer the nitrogen charged can. Though it's still be on the sweet side with light hops, I find it a little lighter in body (less rich, if you will) - not as sweet as the bottled. You may enjoy it more.

I think you are right about the hophead taking over. It's an acquired taste that I am quickly acquiring. You know you're getting it bad when some Stone beers don't seem all that hoppy.
I had the Young's out of the 16.9 oz (why?) bottle. One of the things I wasn't impressed with was the lack of head. For some reason, it feels weird drinking a beer once it has zero head! I assume that would be better out of the nitro can. I'll definitely have to try the can sometime. Thanks, Steve.

You've got to be careful not to drink YDCS too cold. I had it in a pub the other day (from a bottle) and it tasted thinner and more metallic as it was colder than cellar temp. Normally, it tastes great!

I did notice it being a little metallic at first, but as it warmed, more and more chocolate flavor came out. However, it seemed to me that as it warmed it got a little thinner. It seemed creamiest right out of the bottle.

500ml, I believe - don't hold me to that, my math skills stink!
And good point Stronk, too cold is NG with any good beer.

To me - the botles of YDCS show their age more so than the cans.

I like this beer too. I prefer the widget cans.

One of my favs as well. Better on tap, when you can get it, then in the widget cans.

Agreed. It is best on tap. Then next choice would be the widget cans.

It tastes great when it's fresh and on draught (as far as I know it's not available cask). As has been mentioned it doesn't age/travel well.
Of course the last time I had it was at the Young's Tasting room with some rugby team drinking right out of the tap.............
Remind me to tell you about the rugby version of the Mexican wave.

Having tried this beer for the first time last night, I too, was a little disapointed. It was not too cold, as I let it sit out before serving. I have seen this beer around everywhere, and decided it was time. I should have went with something else.

Draught is better but the widget cans are decent too.

How does that widget work?

I think it has to do with the change in pressure when you open the can. The widget breaks and releases it's "stuff"

correct. It is a little plastic container of nitrogen and when the can is popped the nitrogen explodes from the wiget and gives the beer that creamy texture and mouthfeel. Guinness on draught is almost always from a nitrogen tap and I love it. The widget cans and bottles are good too.

Kegs have widgets too?

lol! no they have a separate nitrogen line. Take a look next time you are in a bar. The guinness will be set away from the other taps and will look different. It uses a nitrogen mixture which gives that luxurious, creamy, velvety head and texture.

I knew they used nitrogen, I just wasn't sure how they got it in there. Thanks chaz...
I am lucky enough to have a saloon within crawling distance of home that just started serving it! The only thing they have on tap worth drinking. So I've been doing my part in making sure they keep serving Guiness stout.

Should have went? Oh, the state of our public school systems in the latter part of the 20th century...and there's probably no hope for the 21st... Verb conjugation Bruno! Sorry Fret, just stepping in while you heal.

The sad part is, I work with highly paid management - representing our company to clients and prospective clients - who also sound as though they graduated from the Yogi Berra school of language.

What was wrong with that statement? Got my point across didn't it?
Besides, if you want to shake your head at poor use of the english language, there are far worse examples in society that you could disect.
So HAH!

Just trying to give this place a little semblance of sophistication. Richard is rolling on the floor, laughing at us and our rube-ish butchering of his beloved language. ;)

I dunno - when I hear people who can't put a sentence together, and these people are supposed to be our (my - in the case of management) peers, it's a sign of the downfall of society. BTW - proper conjugation is, "I should have gone with something else." But I'm just picking a fight for the fun of it more than anything else! ;-D
Back to the subject matter - I had the DBL Choco on tap last night and it was pretty lackluster compared with past samplings. I actually wonder if my local got a keg of Young's Oatmeal that might have been mislabeled. It was tasty, but the chocolate character was nil. Hmmm. Might have to check it again...

That's exaclty how I felt about it. Lackluster is a GREAT word to describe it. and as far as the chocolate character, mine was precisely the same as yours. Very disapointed. Should have GONE with something else!

But I've had the bottled rendition recently, and still found it chocolatey tasty. Dunno - more research. It's a dirty, thankless job...
