I noticed this milk stout on the brackets for the "competition", so I had to try it when I found it on tap in my recent visit to my hometown. I didn't enjoy the Sawtooth Ale that I had where I live now (only 1.5 hours west), but I figured being on draft and apparently good enough to be in the race to begin with...what the hell.

First impressions: My experience with milk stouts is small, the best being with Mackeson. Didn't get a real chance to see any head on my beer...I guess in a college town the existance of head on a beer is considered "cheating you out of extra alcohol". The aromas were subtle, but not overpowering to me. I think the reason behind this might be that it seemed very rich and chocolaty (as I expected), but without much bite or sweetness in it's initial taste. The chocolate hints were powerful enough to dominate the flavors, but not enough that I would consider it 'un-drinkable'. Overall I felt like I could substitute this for my favorite milk stout and feel happy that I could make up for it's weaker presence by being able to drink more of it :)

As far as the Nut Brown is concerned: I wasn't happy with the way I received it. I expected a heavy nutty flavor, but I wasn't prepared for the yeasty aspects that seemed to take the real flavor out of the picture. The body of the beer was, as far as I am concerned, almost as heavy as the milk stout. I was hoping for a bit lighter of a beer than the stout I had pulled before it... Maybe I would think better of it had I tried it first, but it took me 45 minutes to finally leave the last 1/4 of the glass to the bartender and have a Blue Moon to bring my tastebuds back to reality.

Am I crazy? It might be the fact that I asked for the LH porter and got the nut brown from the idiot and figured I'd give it a shot anyway...I could have just been mentally biased.

I remember being kind of disappointed with the milk stout. It was a little thin and too sweet and not very well balanced. Kind of like a poor man's Double Chocolate Stout (which I just had tonight!) :D

Other than the "too sweet" part, I think I agree with you. If you think the LH Stout is too sweet, then I would advise you never to try Mackeson until you've had enough of something else in you that you're more willing to try something you normally wouldn't like.

I couldn't help but base my opinions on the LH variety on my tastes of Mackson. It was a little weak, and though it did seem a little unbalanced, it didn't turn me off to it because nothing was so powerful to turn me off to it completely. Of course, I'm used to having a tiny selection in the town that I live in. Something being watered down isn't necessarily a bad thing when the alternative is something that is just bad to begin with, or so diluted that it makes you taste what they're trying to cover up to begin with... ugh.
