OK, Boys and Girls, Unca Toney needs your help...

I got fed up with Windows and I wiped my PC and installed Linux. I fergot about ProMash, but their webpage says that it'll run fine under Wine. Does anyboy have any pointers on how to get ProMash to run under Wine on RedHat Linux 9.0? I gave a cursory glance to the ProMash webpage but didn't see anything useful.

Hep me, hep me!

:)
Toney.

The last time I monkeyed with Wine I noticed they made it pretty slick. Once you get Wine installed it's pretty much just

[toneyc]$wine installer.exe
to run the installer

[toneyc]$wine promash.exe
to run promash

It's not nearly as painful as it was a few years ago.

For the sake of science I did the whole Wine build/install and config. Then installed ProMash demo. It took about 40 minutes - the Wine took considerably longer to build than the kernel.

ProMash seems to work ok. I didn't test it extensively - there are some minor formatting issues.

Cool, you're awesome, Eddy! I can't wait to get home and try it tonight.

And I'm brewing a Belgian Pale Ale AG tomorrow. I'm so excited, I'm gonna be unbearable today!

Eddy maybe you can help me out then.

Have a POS running XP home, tried to partition the drive toinstall RH Linux. It will not let me FDISK, it wont even do it with partition magic. So I said F@%k it i'll reformat and install Linux. It will not let me format the hard drive. This is driving me up the freaking wall.

Any thoughts?

The Redhat installer wouldn't delete the Fat32/NTFS(dunno which you have) partitions?

Try making a Windows boot disk and put ranish partition manager on it.

http://www.ranish.com/part/

I'd download the stable version. Delete all the current partitions and then reformat it.

It is FAT32 and no it would not do anything. It has got to be a windows problem as I cannot get it to do anything at all. It wont even allow me to format the drive, keeps giving me some screwed up message. I will jack with it later tonight and get the message it was giving me.

Partition manager will probably work with a boot disk. It doesn't care about being nice and will just blow stuff away.

those M$ guys are none to happy to have linux running anywhere.. so good luck using windows software to do this.

i think the way to get around this is to wipe out your hard drive, and do the partitioning from the RedHat install. this should let you create a linux partition and a windows one (windows makes it really difficult/impossible to create linux partitions). then you install redhat. then, windows will see the windows partition, so install it there. be sure to set up redhat's boot loader, it should work with both worlds.

i've done this once, and it was a while ago.. but i think thats the basics of it!

That's why I asked him if the RH installer would/wouldn't work. With Redhat - it's a walk in the park to make a dual boot machine. I do it with a fair amount of regularity on the machines here at work.

Using Ranish you can also resize partitions. So if you want to deallocate space from your current fat32 then just defrag it and then remove space from the end.

If none of those methods work, you have a physical problem with the boot sector on your hard drive that is preventing you from modifying the partition tables. Also, check your bios settings for something like "Virus Protection" or "Boot sector portection" and make sure that's turned off. If it is a physical problem with the drive, then it is only a matter of time until you turn the machine on and it won't be able to read the partition tables. Backup anything you want to keep. You could also try dban "Derek's Boot And Nuke" disk wiper to completely wipe *all* info off the drive and start again. It can be found at dban.sourceforge.net.

I have a Maxtor hard drive, and I could not FDISK it the day I got it. I had to go to the Maxtor web site and get a partition software from them.

The writer of Promash posts on this board. Why not ask him directly?
