I have been consuming mainly beer for so long (excepting an occasional Single malt) that I don't know that much about other beverages. I am re-educating myself on tequila. What beverage do you drink as a second choice to beer or in place of beer if only swill is available? Just curious.

I don't drink distilled spirits much and when I do it is only Tequila. Other then beer I am usually running around with a glass of water.

Wine. I try to give beer and wine equal time :)

I'd probably say wine. Not to much of a spirits drinker, but when I do it's vodka or tequila.

But if we're talking non-alcoholic, it'd be coffee. Man, I love a cuppa joe!

Congrats, Tweek on your recent accomplishment!

Good coffee though, no maxwell house here. I would say I am on the order of 3-4 cups a day average. A nice medium-dark roast, almost nutty/woody flavor profile.

And no Phoo Phoo stuff like Hazelnut either! I brought some decent coffee home from Costa Rica. In fact I toured a coffee plantation while there. Brita.

I honestly don't drink much other than beer. Occaisionally wine, of which I'm trying to learn more about, at least enough to pass for ordering in a restaurant. Occaisionally a single malt scotch if the mood strikes me.

AMEN TO THAT, BROTHER!
I'm about to upgrade to a highend grinder at home to improve the experience even more. Fresh grind those beans when possible!

If a bar doens't haven any decent beer I usually go with a Jack and coke or if the mood strikes a Windor and Seven. One of these days I will have to try scotch.

Williams brewing has a decent selectiong of roasters in their catalog. Funny how beer lovers/brewers tend to be aficionados of many other things.

When you do, stick with the Single Malts

Coffee definitely coffee. I've even started to roast my own beans, and so far I've been very pleased with the results. I use a burr grinder and a drip machine. I also make espresso and that is probably the next upgrade I'll make to my set up is to get a better esrpesso / cap machine.

I also like to drink wine and the occasional distilled malt beverage.

Thanks man!

As far as coffee goes, some of the best coffee I have ever had comes from a place not too far from me called Los Gatos Roasting company. I cant afford to drink it all the time, but it is great stuff.

I also very much enjoy the single malts, but those I DEFINATELY cant afford to drink very often. Though there is one I have been into for a while that can be pcked up around the 25 dollar range, and it is Glenmorangie Port wood finish. For that price point I havent found one that can beat it yet. I tend to like the Highlands though so if you are of the "if it doesnt taste like ashtray it doesnt belong in my glass" crowd you prob wont like it.

Cheers.

Coffee for me, too. And for my real-beer-drinking friends, as well.

Weird; is it just that more of the general population now drink good coffee, or is it that beer drinkers are more naturally inclined towards coffee?

On that topic, I've been getting negative vibes about adding coffee as a flavouring to a porter. Has anyone tried this before? At what stage? I'd imagine leaving the beans in the secondary for about a month would give the best results.

...if good beer is not available (or for a change of pace):

at home -

1) wine (Merlot and Cab. Sauv.)
2) gin and tonic (Bombay Sapphire, Tanqueray, or better)
3) single malt
4) water

at an establishment -

1) gin and tonic
2) wine (usually with dinner)

I find most places way overcharge for decent wine, so that is more of a home drink.

I have spent nights drinking ice water with shots of tequila; unfortunately not the good stuff, but I do love a tequila buzz!

I switch around, But when the beer on tap is crap I usually got for a shot of either vodka, rum, or tequila. Baileys on the rocks some times too.

coffee here too, cappucino's that's it!
i get my beans from the mission inn coffe house and grind them myself. i don't like the beans starbuck sells.
my wife thought i was just being picky because i always inspect the coffee beans first. i like the espresso bean the best.
next im gunna upgrade my espresso machine, i'd like a gaggia, one of the manual hand pump old fashion kind achilles i think it's called, but they're like $800! think i'll go with the baby gaggia for around $350....i hope..

my wife loves wine so we drink it on occasion , only red wine though. i havent had many white wines that i ever liked, and blush??? eeww. wine isn't a manly drink like beer imo, but blushes..uh thats goin too far!

My first choice is wine. Living in Northern CA., its kind of hard to not like wine. The choices here are incredible. Single malt scotch is also a must. And good coffee is a definite, too. I have a friend who is starting a distillery and he makes an amazing gin. So a good gin and tonic on a hot summer day is great, too.

Wine, preferably a nice cab, merlot, or gewurtz, depending on the food pairing. As for non-alcoholic, I like to find rare, or local, sodas. Like Ale8 in Kentucky, Foxon Park in Connecticut, or good ole Moxie (which I can still find in New England from time to time). One of my favorite sodas is Vernors (from Michigan) - kind of an extra spicy ginger ale.

On weekends if its not beer I enjoy a gin martini(Bombay Sapphire preferred with olives stuffed with blue cheese!!) or a nice bottle of wine.. Merlot or Shiraz. Non-alcoholic, I live on Diet Pepsi.

Coffee and beer.

I drink coffee before work, during work, and on the ride home from work. After that, beer till I go to sleep. That's about all I drink.

I don't like wine or spirits, although I'm thinking about trying them out again. I've only drank cheap ones to get drunk up until I got a taste for good beer. I'm sure I'd look at them differently now.

I have always had a similar saying.

I liked it in the pub when a guy would bring a chick (trust me, the term fits this profile) in for dinner. He would try to impress her and order a craft beer, usually the biggest wuss of a beer served (our case was a Raspberry Wheat) and she would equally try to impress with her knowledge of the wine selection, by ordering a white zin. Not white zinfandel just white zin, I guess that is how you sophisticated people would order it. The level of class woudl just fill an ice cube tray!

I understand that not all people have the knowledge, but at LEAST attempt to try something new. Arrrrrrrrrgh!

If it's not beer, I'll drink almost any good American or Canadian whiskey with a splash of water, on the rocks. I dont go for the blended scotch's (tastes like wet cardboard), but havent progressed to single malt scotch's yet. I also like Cuba Libres: run, coke, and lime. Westerhall is a pretty good rum.
