Well I have to report that the beer scene is quite dismal in Costa Rica. I sampled Imperial, Pilsen, Bavarian Gold and Bavarian Dark. Bavarian Gold was the best of the lot. It at least had a bit of malt flavor up front. All of the beers tasted pretty much like I remember BMC tasting. I am certain that they use more than just water, malt, hops and yeast. I know I tasted adjuncts. The most prevalent beer there was the Imperial. I went for a day in the pacific sail fishing and we caught 15 of those 100lb babies. The only beer on the boat was the Imperial in cans. So I reluctently had a few of them. This is the first time I have had beer of this low calibre in any quantity in years. The country was very nice and the fishing was superb (if there was a way, I would post some pictures) but the beer was awful. I drank more liquor than I normally do because of it. The Food was very decent too. Lots of seafood, lobster and fish.

I have been to CR a few times to surf and scout out real estate to buy. I would be interested in starting up a brewpub down there. Anybody interested???

Welcome to the board. I'll be back down there in March. I'm not sure how well abrewpub would do. Supposedly in this country you need a population of 50,000 to support a brewpub or brewery. I have heard that Coke and Pepsi own the two largest beer brands there but I am not sure how accurate that is.

There is a brewpub in San Jose that I found on the net. I am going down in Dec to do some grading on property bought near Dominical. I will check it out and give a report. I am looking for a way to be down there and do something I love. I heard they are building an International airport below Dominical and they are paving the road, so it might be a few years away but if I buy the commercial beachfront lot now, we will be ready for the brewpub in the future. A brewer in paridise... oh yeah!

Yes please let me know about the brewpub in San Jose. I loved my trip there and especially the fishing. I'll be there again in March.

Just got back from an 8 day vaca to Costa Rica. Beautiful place with a lackluster beer scene. I stuck with Bavaria Dark for the most part - as well as some daquiris made with local fruits like guanabana, mango, etc.
Though after whitewater kayaking, rafting, canyoning, mountain biking, etc., I was often too tired to even think about or want a beer!
Can't say I'd want anything to do with San Jose - terribly crowded, dirty city - could be any old large city in any other place in the world. I was in a mountain town (Turriabla?) and saw a couple of Caribbean coast towns as well. I would think a brewpub might do better on one of the coasts that draws in tourists.
Cheers!

San Jose is ok. there are some coffee plantations just outside of town that are kind of neat. But I'm with you about the coastal areas. I was in a resort on the Pacific near Quepos(sp). It was fantastic. And the fishing is tremendous. Sailfish. The beer scene is dismal and the Bavaria Dark was my preference too. But Imperial was the most readily available.
