I've got a friend who's moving to Piscataway from Texas. He's vowed to drink nothing but Shiner Bock until he leaves. Can you guys give him some help on what brews to look for in NJ?

Thx, Craig

anything from brooklyn brewery. flying fish has good stuff; pa breweries like weyerbacher and victory, dogfish head from delaware. if he's into wheat beer, there's high point brewery from butler (not far from my hometown), which brews nothing but wheat beers.

if i weren't at work, i think i'd remember a few more, but that's a good start.

hope that helps,
Ed.

Don't forget Climax, Heavyweight, all the beers that come down from the Norheast (Geary's, Allagash, Harpoon, etc.) and the ones I'm still not getting to.

A good place to start shopping is
Super Saver Liquors
888 US Highway 22, Somerville, (908) 722-6700

Great selection and they sell some vintage beers.

Prosit,
Stan

I agree with the NJ posts. A decent liquor store near Piscataway is in New Brunswick across from St. Peters Hospital and University Orthopaedic. If he is on Rt. 18 in East Brunswick he should stop into Marketplace liquor store in the A&P shopping center behind K-Mart. If he is looking for a brewpub he can find one on Rt. 1 in the Pizzeria Uno, in downtown Woodbridge near the train station is JJ Bitting ( Great American Beer Festival metal winner ). Avoid the one in New Brunswick called the Harvest Moon.

Great selection very near Piscataway at Oak Tree Buy-Rite liquors--Park Avenue and Oak Tree Rd. South Plainfield. Tell the owner Dan Ratti that the PubScout sent you.

And disregard that caveat about the Harvest Moon brewpub. There's a new brewer there making some good beer. See the Feb/March issue of Ale Street News--New Moon Rising?

You'll be pleasantly surprised.

I stand corrected. I recently stopped in to the Harvest Moon Brewpub in New Brunswick and found the beers to be quite enjoyable. I spent maybe an hour talking to the new brewer and I feel the pub is now in good ( clean ) hands.

Yards and Heavyweight are the best breweries in the area and are both widely available around North/Central NJ.

Dont forget Basil T's in Red Bank and Toms River
