View Full Version : iodophor: yeast killer?

I use iodophor to sanitize my bottles and I've always wondered: Do I *have* to wait for the bottles to completely dry? And if I don't, will that tiny bit of iodophor kill the yeast that allows bottle-conditioning?

Thoughts, guesses or fermented rants?

if you dilute to the proper amounts you do not need to wait for it to completely dry. I just shake mine out and fill with beer. I have never had any off flavors due to iodophor or carbonation problems.

You need to make sure you are doing the right dilution though. too much and you will be able to taste it, too little and it wont be effective.

Thanks for the post. I've never had any problem, either, but I was faced with an emergency bottling session and didn't have time to dry 'em out fully.

To be honest, I judge my idophor levels by color -- not too light, not too dark. Works so far ...

Well it should be a tablespoon per 5 gallons. I usually make my solution, then pour some of it in a glass, then I pour it out and without shaking it or rinsing it I add fresh water and drink. You should not be able to taste the iodophor. If you can you could end up tasing it in your beer.

Someone posted an article about that a few days ago but I can't seem to find it at the moment.

I think the essence of the article was that you don't have to wait for it to dry completely. Just shake the excess out and go.
