Hey Guys,

How about this one...... I was in the fishing section of my local Sporting Goods store today, and what do I see but a portable minnow bucket aerator. Someone must have thought of this already, I mean it just seems like such a perfect way to oxygenate wort!! Of course you won't be using pure oxygen, but rather the outside air, but it beats the hell out of shaking 5 or 10 gallons of wort for 15 minutes! This unit runs 60 hours on 2 "D" batteries, has a 24" clear tube, and a diffuser stone on the end...all for $7.99; DAMN!! The unit is made by Rapala, and here's the link....

Am I all wet on this one, or are my Yeastie Beasties gonna be dancin' up a storm? I've been away from brewing for a few years (shame on me), but I've never heard of this. The only problem I might see is possibility of contamination, but I'm sure that provisions can be made.

Anyone out there tried this?

that may work, however they dont say much about the specs on it. You can get an airator with a .5 micron tolerance at most hombrew shops for under 20 bucks and you can get cans of 02 at any hardware store for 1.50. so basically for an extra 13 or so bucks you could know for sure.

IMHO the aeration thing is over-rated unless it is a BIG BEER . I started out brewing with dry yeast and sprinkled it on the cooled wort and had a lag time only a little longer of what I have now at re-hydrating dry yeast and it takes off fine. Maybe 10 hours. A splash from the boil pot to the fermenter is a good thing and plenty, but why try to contaminate it with alll of the extra air fish thingys? Want liquid yeast? Put some water in it and save $5. I've experimented with both and don't see any difference for a homebrewer. Whaddu I know? My sanitation seems more important than aeration. Got an aerator? Buy a goldfish. Don't get me wrong. I want to help. Just an observation.
