First, St. Patrick it is good to hear from you on the boatrd again. I hope you and your wife are well.

Syr. has a great St. Patrick Day parade. It is this Sat. I usally work on Sat., but I took some Personal Holiday time, do every year, so I can go. One year, still single, I got to downtown Syr at 9 am for warm up beers for the noon start. I got home at 3;20 am Sunday morning. I had a great time.

Happy St. Patrick's day to all.

Im going to go to Stoddards and make a scene when they wont serve me green stout!

HAHA. really though I am not sure. I am toying with the idea of a BBQ cause the weather is so nice and I do have a mighty fine stout on tap :)

I unfortunatly dont have any stout on tap or even brewing, I am ashamed. I am however getting a few fried togather and brewing a batch of irish dry and watching some irish movies(Boondock Saints)

Being Irish, my plan is to studiously avoid going to any Oirish bars. I'll probably neck some Beamish and sit on the front porch.

Second only to New Year's Eve in the number of amateurs on the road, right Meridian?

I'll probably have some corned beef, a Guinness (or two) and a bit of Busmill's or Jameson's with friends - some of who are actually Irish, as am I!

Boondock Saints, Sunriver? I was thinking of The Secret of Rowan Inish, possibly Michael Collins. There's always Waking Ned Divine, but ever since I learned that wasn't really filmed in Ireland, I'm a bit disappointed - great story nonetheless.

Slainte!

The local steakhouse does a great corned beef for St. Patrick's day, then we'll have some Guinness and maybe Murphy's at home.
Movies? 'The Snapper' is a fine Irish movie, and features Colm Meany (from Star Trek) in some classic beer-drinking scenes.

I have to commend Guinness on their marketing. they really have made it so that they are almost synonomous with St. Patricks day. God for them. Better them than one of the others with advertising budgets (you know who Im talking about)

Cheers.

BoonDock Saint happens to be a cult favorite of mine so I like to look for any excuse to watch it.

As for Busmills, hmmmmmm...... I think that could be a good addition to my day.

I have to start the party with Murphys Stout but everything else is fair game.

Our Lager,
Which is kegs
Foamy is they head
They will be drunk, I will be drunk,
At home as it is in the pub,
Give us this day a pint of ale,
And forgive us our spills, as we forgive those who spilled on us
Thy lager, Thy ale, thy heavenly stout,
Barmen

It's good that Nevin's is walking distance for you Student - you know it will be a zoo? I tend to steer away from any bar with an Irish name on St. Pat's...nothing but tourists.

However, there's an old-time towny tavern down the road a piece that has the best corned beef - McCormick's. And they pour a nice Guinness... Hey, it's a national holiday, right? I can have one 3.8 beer with lunch, right? ;)

hrmm never tried it... might be good to check it out. you are right, any irishy sounding bar name will likely be horrible and add that it is near a college campus it could really suck. then again i was hoping by going in the afternoon it would be less packed, but you never know with these crazy kids.

Who knows, Saturday may take the brunt of the partiers away from the traditional day this year?

I think the McCormick's regulars take the day off just to hang out at the tavern all day!

Our local USHL team has a hockey game that night. We are gonna hit that up, Killian's Red is the closest thing the game will have to Irish beer. Not very close. Then we are gonna hit some bars. I took the next day off to brew.

Plans are to cut out of work early and hit the pub one block down the street with the office gang. Then I’ll head home for dinner. I’m making a Guinness Irish stew…probably washed down with a few pints of Guinness as well.

For those that are interested here is the recipe:

Feeds 6-8

2 lbs stewing beef, cut into 1.5-inch cubes
4 tablespoons flour
Salt and pepper to taste
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 large onions chopped course
3 cloves of garlic crushed
3 sprigs fresh thyme
1 sprig fresh rosemary
One can of Guinness
6 cups beef stock
2 tablespoons tomato paste
5 medium potatoes cut into 1-inch pieces
4 carrots chopped into 1-inch pieces
3 celery stocks sliced course
½ small turnip chopped into 1-inch pieces

1. Toss beef in flour; season with salt and pepper shake off excess flour. Heat oil in a large skillet on high heat and brown meat on all sides. Transfer meat to a large saucepan.

2. In same skillet, lightly brown onions on high heat. Reduce heat and add garlic, thyme and rosemary and cook 2 minutes. Add to meat.

3. Deglaze skillet using half of the Guinness ale. Bring to a boil and simmer for 2 or 3 minutes. Add to meat.

4. Place saucepan with meat on medium high heat and add stock, remaining Guinness and tomato paste. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and leave to gently simmer, uncovered for 45 min, adding more hot liquid if necessary to barely cover meat.

5. Add potatoes, carrots, celery and turnip to meat. Simmer gently 1 hour or until vegetables and meat are tender. Add more liquid to barely cover meat if necessary.
