I am new to this whole process (except for the drinking part). I have brewed several batches with good results. This weekend I am going for the third. I want a great porter. I like a bit of a smoky taste, anyone have any ideas, recipes, or locations on the web for any. I have been using both malt extracts and specialty malts. Haven’t had the time, or money for all grain, yet.

do you have a decent homebrew shop near you? look for Peated or Rauch specialty grains, add it to a porter kit... However, my club brethren have mentioned that a little Rauch goes a loooooong ways, so as they say, enjoy in moderation...
I found peated at midwest (http://www.midwestsupplies.com/products/grains.asp)
and Rauch at morebeer (http://www.morebeer.com/catalog.php3?secID=grains&secName=Grains%2C+Adjuncts+%26+Bags)

I would highly suggest you goto the homebrew shop and tell the owner/operator about what kind of taste you want. OR,
4112 Porter
7 Lbs liquid malt extract
.50 Lbs 60L crystal malt
.50 Lbs 40L Crystal malt
.35 Lbs Rauch malt (More or less depending on personal taste)
6 oz chocolate malt
3 oz Black patent malt
1 cup brown sugar
.6 oz Fuggles
1.75 oz Golding
English ale yeast
Blah blah blah....
you know what to do
Golding for 80 min
Fuggles for 5 min
3-5 days primary
5-7 secondary
Keg/bottle
