After reading the Bigfoot thread, I was inspired to do a vertical tasting of the vintages I had of Bigfoot ('98, '99. '02, '03). See my post (http://www.realbeer.com/discussions/showthread.php?s=&postid=28781#post28781) in the Bigfoot thread.

My question is has anyone else done their own vertical tastings? Was my methodology correct? I must admit it was one of the most fun beer evenings I've had in a while. Normally, I'm all about variety and tasting as many different kinds of beer as I can. But this was something of a relevation in that subtle complexities and variations in the beer came through. It was quite educational and fun as well. Any other comments that you have on vertical tastings you have done would be appreciated. This is a new pastime for me, I fear. (Fortuately, I have many varieties of beer in my cellar with which to do verticals. See the cellaring beer thread. great write up on your tasting man!

The only thing I do in vertical tastings is I always taste from oldest to youngest. You didnt mention your tasting order. Also when vintage big beers or when sampling a lot of them I like to do it out of brandy snifters. I find it much easier to pick out the subtleties through this medium. I also find it is a lot of fun to do it with people if you have that option. that also allows for more beers to be tasted without getting too ripped or frying your taste buds.

Thanks for writing up your notes on that. That was really a good read. Sounded like a lot of fun too!

Cheers!
