Historic Edinburgh Brewery Closing
Scottish & Newcastle have announced that they are to close their brewery =
at
Fountainbridge which has been producing beer for over 100 years. =
Previously
regarded as a Scottish Company, making McEwan's Export and McEwan's =
Lager,
this is their last production plant in Scotland, although the beer will
continue to be made in Scotland. The company has arranged for the
Caledonian Brewery, only a mile away from Fountainbridge, to take over
production. But the closure of the brewery will result in 170 =
redundancies.
The company claims that the facility has been running at 50% capacity at
times. It produces around 190 million litres of its various brands each
year. The Scottish & Newcastle head office is still in Edinburgh and the
company denies it has any plans to move this away.

I took a 3 week vacation in Scotland back in 2001 and for the couple of days in Edenburgh, I stayed in a B&B just a few blocks from the brewery. Walked past it several times, but they were never open for tours on the days I was there. Sad to see it go, although I'm sure Caledonian will do a good job, their beers are quite good!

Agreed, Caladonian makes nice beers.

Absolutely true, and it is a real modern (stainless steel, high output) brewery.

Worse still, their Newcastle plant (as in SCOTTISH & NEWCASTLE - get it?) is now to close.

What name can they call themselves now?

snigger!

I enjoyed a couple pints of Deutchers IPA on this trip. Still a superb beer!
