I brewed my first ever batch on Sat. (brown ale) I pitched the yeast around 7:00pm. I noticed activity in the airlock that night before I went to bed. Yesterday I tried to count the number of bubbles/ minute but I could not count fast enough. I estimate 80 to 100/minute. This morning I looked and it was going maybe one or two a minute. Now (10:30pm) it is bubbling about 1 every 10 minutes. The wort was 80deg when the yeast was pitched then was dumpped on top of 2 1/2 gal cold water (slightly below room temp) to make up 5 gal. The primary has been maintained at 72degrees. I peeked into the fermenter a while ago and there is very little foam on the surface and maybe an inch or so of thin goo surrounding the edge. I have not taken any gravity readings. Does this sound right?

sure. sometimes you can get a good run at it and the ferment finishes up fast. No worries. Let it sit a bit longer or go ahead and rack it to secondary. You can always take a gravity reading if you are worried, but I wouldnt fret it too much, most likely all is well.
cheers!

I have to agree with Tweek. All sounds just about right. Sometimes fermentations take no time at all.

I checked it his evening. No fermentation observable. I took an sg reading of 1.020 (corrected). It smells alchoholic and tastes a little thin and mild with maybe just a hint of sweetness. How long should I let it sit in the primary. I was planning on racking to secondary on Sunday.

For most beers, I do a full week in primary, even if it has slowed. Then at least a week secondary. I do not worry too much if lack of time cause me to leave it in secondary longer. In fact. last several batches I have done about 2 weeks in secondary.
Be sure and sample it when you rach to secondary.

You Might consider racking it into secondary fermentation now to get it off the trub and dead yeast. this will make the batch take longer but can improve taste.
If you are over excited about your first taste test then I would say leave it for a few more days
