I just got through brewing two beers from one grain bill. I mashed enough grain to draw an Imperial Porter from the first runnings and then sparged a second regular Porter from the rest. I will end up with a little less that 5 gallons on the Imperial and a full 5 on the second. This should cut my brewing time down considerably. My costs also. Next time I am going to try to do two different styles from one mash.

Usually you will see this done with Barleywines and the second runnings result in what is called a "Small Beer". Anchor has one they put out, I had it a few years ago at the GABF.

Or it's done with a medium high strength Pale/IPA and the small beer is a mild. I've done this same thing recently and the tannin/sugar ratio is noticeably much higher, taste-wise, in the small beer.

I knew I din't do anything cutting edge. I just think it's cool that I can do 10 gallons without a big investment in equipment. I will have to adjust some of the numbers as far as grain goes. But if this works out well for me, it solves a lot of my problems in the summer when there is less time and money for me to brew.

I think it's a very cool thing to do. It has such a historical, frugal feel to it....

Talks about Dubbels and Trippels, and how small beers were made from their second runnings.
