I did my first all grain two weeks ago and can't wait to do it again. Unfortunately my wife has me busy with stuff that I know I have to do and want to do. It leaves me little time to brew though!

My thoughts were to take all grain to the next level. Maybe go as cheaply as possible or just bite the bullet and get my system to where I'd like it to be short of an all automated system!

Cheaply means a 3 tier Angle Iron frame with Marrone Turkey burners and 7.5 gallon pots with a Gott Cooler as my Mash Tun.

I thought I'd like to get "Burners" as opposed to "Jet Burners" that way if I ever get rid of the cooler and have 3 pots linked with plumbing I can use a low flame on the mash tun to do step infusions. I'd like to at least do a two step, 150-155 to 170.

My question is where can I get a good sized Burner on the cheap? I've done Internet searches and found Burners at www.cajunshoppe.com for $69.95 or Jet Burners for $23.95. The Jets will work fine for my HLT and my Cook pot.

I'm thinking of getting the Jet Burner with a Baffle to spread the flame for now. I can always have a sale on ebay or offer the stuff here for resale.

Here is this guys system that kind of made me feel like an idiot designing my sytem when he is working with this! haha

I just don't want to buy things twice when I think I'll pretty much keep going with this hobby!

Sorry it's long.

Look at me talking to myself! haha

I found a page where a man describes how he purchased burners directily from King Cooker for about $15.50 each!

I have yet to call, so I don't know if they are still available. I assume they would since that is what they do!

Revisit: 2-23-03 After more thought on this, I think I'll wait and see if Lowes will have those Marrone Turkey Fryers again for $20.00. This way you get a stand, Enamel Pot and regulator.

If I purchase the burner's alone I'd have to assemble an in-line manifold to distribute the gas.

I have been wanting to take the plunge into all grain for awhile now but am a little intimidated by all the equipment I've been looking at.

I like the setup you showed in the post. What is that on the top?...it looks like an aquarium.

Summer is coming and I am determined to do an allgrain. Thanks for the cool info.

What is a good estimate on the cost of the initial set up?

The initial cost for going all grain can be as low as $30.

I get my grains cracked where I buy them. I use my kitchen stove to heat water for the mash. I mash the grains in a cooler that I bought for about $20. I use a few pieces of copper pipe with holes in them for a lauter manifold, and I sparge using a tupperware lid floating on the mash.

You can check out the equipment and procedure I use at: http://www3.telus.net/sockmonkeysandbeer/beer/HowIBrew/howIbrew.html

I have a gatorade cooler and a bazooka screen, plus a rubber grommet and a faucet from home depot. Cheap. Easy. I batch sparge, which makes it that much easier. You could roll up a screen and make an effective substitute for the bazooka screen.
As for boiling pots, I got a cheap stainless steeel set (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2383775366&category=38172) on ebay. They're very much el-cheapo, and I have to split up my batch between two pots, but it does the job. Make sure you split the hops proportionally, too!!!!! I just cool mine in a tub of cold water. And the lid from one of the pots fits nicely inside the cooler so that hot water does not disturb the grains when I pour.

If you can get the heads for the burners cheap enough, find a local welder and have him fabricate you a stand out of angle iron. Our local guy built us a 3 tier stand for about $100 and then tacked on the burners.

Those are certainly cool but I wonder what kind of weight they will support. I am sure for a 5gal batch they are fine, but if you are doing 10+ I would be curious.

Think I might have to call and check them out. I like the wind guard additions too. Thanks for posting that.
