View Full Version : Boiled Bottle Caps-unused rusting.....

I boiled all my caps prior to bottling my first batch of Pilsner Urquell. I used what I needed and air dried the rest on a paper towel. After letting them dry I noticed some rust on the paper towels. Are they ok to boil again and use, or will any minute particles of rust contaminate my beer?
Thanks

they are cheap, why not just buy new ones?

I wouldn't reuse rusty caps. I soak mine in sanitizer as opposed to boiling them, that way I don't ruin all of them that don't get used.

I remember having this problem... yet another reason to go buy some EZ - Caps :)

First time capping blues! haha
Next time I will count out what I need. But even if you sanitize in one step, aren't they still getting wet and need to dry? I dunno..
And I think the Grolsch bottles may be the way to go. Capping wasn't horrible. I spaced the bottles out on the Butcher Block counter so I had access and was able to cap pretty fast actually!
I like the wood box, carboard won't last too long with wet bottles and hands.
I think having the right tools definitely make the experience much more enjoyable!

If you sanitize instead of boil, you definitely want to use a no rinse cleaner, it's just alot easier... I soak them for five or ten minutes while I'm doing other things, then lay them out on a paper towel to drain, I figure that as long as they have a bit of the sanitizer on them, they're okay.
The EZ caps are really nice. I am definitely going to continue to add to my collection.
I thought that capping was fun, but definitely easier if you have another person helping.
