Apologies for the delay but I missed this.
And yes. Long gone.
So far as I know, no UK beer is made nowadays with a wired cork (although the style is common enough in Belgium and France).
The only UK beer still sealed with a cork (which is of the cylindrical type) is Gale's Prize Old Ale.
So far as Whitbreads is concerned - the brewery is the nearest we have to Anheuser Busch. Aquisitorial, ruthless and makes no good beer.

Whitbread were famous for buying and closing breweries which were going concerns :(
CAMRA (UK) even had a T-shirt printed, "The Whitbread Tour of Destruction", listing the breweries they closed.
They have sold every brewery and are now into hotels and leisure.
