I figured we could start a thread detailing latest acquisitions.

I've found a paint store I really like! This is my second time there. The have tons of stuff I want to try (Dogfish, Hair of the Dog, North Coast, Rogue, Stone, etc), especially the rarer stuff in bombers.

Anyway, back on topic... :D

I got a bomber of Avery's 10 (http://www.averybrewing.com/avery/BigBeers/seasonal/ten) (it was a tough decision between this and their new Beast (http://www.averybrewing.com/avery/BigBeers/seasonal/thebeast)), and a bottle of Fuller's 1845. I'm pretty psyched about trying both.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the Fullers. A Fine beverage! I just got a St. Peter's Cream Stout and an Old Style-Porter. Neither of which I've tried. I've tried some of the St. Peter's line and been impressed so I look forward to these.

I've heard lots of good things about the Fuller's 1845. Hopefully my expectations aren't too high.

When I first read your post, I thought you meant and "Old Style" Porter. Like the Pabst (?) brand. :)

Here are my notes on the Fullers 1845. Fortuately, it is bottle-conditioned, so your bottle should compare reasonably with the cask version.

"A rare opportunity to sample this in cask form. A fruity/malty beer, but surprisingly easy to drink for a beer of this strength - not cloying at all. Yeasty/biscuity tones in the aroma, plenty of hops to liven up the palate and a lengthy, well-balanced finish. However, not one to drink all night in a pub on the occasions when it appears on draught. Old Bank fo England, London WC1, December 2003. 3.9/5"

I appreciate that 6.3% may not be that high in U.S. terms, but it is for a cask ale to drink in pints in the UK.

Sounds yummy Chris. I may have to indulge tonight. I'll be sure to post some notes if (or when) I do.

All right, Beaver... where did you find your new paint store? I'm going to have to go there when I move back...

Beaver

I mentioned it before. It's Wilburs...next to Wild Oats (used to be Alfalfa's)...across College from the mall.

Very nice place! It'll take me quite a while to sample everything they have there...I'm looking forward to it! :)

Sometime in the next 3 months. Maybe as early as late March, maybe as late as early May. Not sure yet...

Now that all Fort Collins establishments are SMOKE FREE (hooray!!!!!), I'd be glad to lift a pint with you when we make it out there! (Karen, my wife, will lift a root beer instead if that's okay... ;))

I went over to LA. Saturday and stopped at paint store there. They can sell singles from sixers and they cannot do that here in TX. I bought 18 different singles (some with 2-3 of each brand) and singles were usually priced at $1.79-$3.79 each. Some of pints and 22 oz were priced higher.
Got to check out stand and first cashier left and told other one to ring me up because he would have to look up all single prices. I was not in hurry so did not bother me. The second cashier took my stuff out of basket and said "These are expensive if you buy them as singles. It is easier to ring these up as a six-pack, so I will just charge you for six pack". He rang up three six packs at $6.00 each. Did not charge tax, asked me "How does $18.00 sound?"
I paid and got out of there laughing and smiling on way to car. Made my day.

i had the inverse happen to me about a week ago... i was picking up a 6 bottles of DFH Olde School barleywine (at about $5.50 ea), but they only sell them as singles. so, the guy in the back gave me a random 6pk carton, paulaner i think it was, to hold the bottles in. i take it to the front and the cashier rings it up as 6pk of paulaner for about $8.

i just couldn't do it though. its a good store and they get good stuff, so i really don't want to rip them off. so, i paid the $35 instead of getting it for $8. but, man, it was tempting to just keep my mouth shut and walk out of there.

And the following beers I have never had before, Not sure if they are good or not.
FullersIPA
Anchor Steam
REd Tail Ale
John Courage Amber
Rogue Dead Guy Ale
Paulaner Hefe-Weizen
Sierra Nevada Stout

It wasnt that they rang them up wrong, they were just too lazy to look up individual prices. I already had credit card out to pay for what I was getting. It is only paint store in area that has good selection of beers, so I will be back.
Sallad, I applaud you and your honesty.

today i picked up ommegang rare vos and aventinus doppelbock, tho i need a glass to go with that one (no wheat beer glasses. not even any mugs). i also need to find a trappist chalice so i can finally drink this westvleteren hanging around in my beer fridge.

also brian at sam's told me he was getting north coast brewing stuff in... yay old rasputin. I wish he could get some stone, bear republic and lagunitas though. then i'd be in beer heaven i think.

thanks steve!

i really should order it. ive spent way too long at work trying to find a store with a chimay or westmalle goblet and an aventinus glass, but came up empty.

so instead i went all-out and ordered an ommegang goblet as well as a duvel t-shirt from ommegang, so i have a goblet coming.

now i have to decide whether to just go to crate and barrel or something and get a plain wheatbeer-style glass and save on shipping or order the aventinus online. and then do i need a separate wheatbeer glass when spring and summer arrive and i start tasting hefeweizens or will the aventinus fit the bill?

i always promised id not become a beer glass collecting freak, but its starting to creep up on me even though i have absolutely no room in my cabinets. oh the conundrums of beer.

just for fun, these are the beer glasses i have--anything glaring missing?

3 nonick imperial pints w/ crown
1 goose island imperial pint
1 goose island straight side pint
1 duvel tulip
1 unibroue tulip
1 pilsner-style conical glass
2 snifters
1 ommegang goblet (on the way)

I have 2 Weizen glasses from C&B myself (even though I think they've labeled them something lame like Bavarian Pilsner glasses) for every day use, and a couple German import Weizens (imported by the Steveh Import Co.), including an Aventinus, for special occasions. The Germans would be sticklers and say you have to use the Aventinus glass for Aventinus, but I think a regular Weizen glass will do you fine until you really want to start collecting.

And, here I go promoting the site again, but I'm thinking of getting this set just for sampling: https://store.beveragebistro.com/cgi-bin/interch/bevbistro/scan/co=1/se=GEARMJGLASS/sf=sku/se=RareBeer_Gear/sf=category/sp=store_itemfly.html

Hmm, Goose Island imperial pint, eh? [/B]

gotta love $3 sunday tours, which includes ridiculous amounts of beer as well as a free glass. couple that with Sam's free tasting on the first sunday of every month and whoa boy...

One time i got a straight-side pint glass, the other what i think is an imperial pint (shaped like the guinness glasses, tulip pint style?) At least its the shape they serve me when i toss out my MBA so it better be an imperial pint! i didnt drink all those styles of beer for nothing!

ok well i think i will pick up a wheat glass at crate and barrel on the way home and then get the aventinus sometime later (gotta see how much i like it i guess)

They can't???

I do it all the time here in Texas! World Market and Central Market both encourage it, as a matter of fact. They both have blank cardboard six-pack holders where you can put one of each beer you are wanting to try. It is not a TABC code that prevents it, I assure you. Perhaps you just need to switch paint stores to one who invites adventure!

Oh yes, you will like it. I was stupid enough to only buy one last week when they only had 4 left. Drank it this weekend for the first time and WOW!! Went back monday to buy the rest and GONE!!! Someone else beat me to it. Should have gone with my first instincts and buy em all up.

I was told Beer/Wine stores can sell singles but actual liquor stores cannot. Does not matter anyway, since here in E. Texas they think Shiner Bock and maybe Corona are "good imported beer". I stock up when I go to Central Market in DFW area. Never got the blank sixer holders though.

If you go to the one in Plano, just off 190, then they are all the way down at the left end of that massive beer case, right next to the glasses. And if you happen to see a large, shaved headed guy with buggy full of beer and a woman with red hair urging him to quit buying so much, that would be me!

I love it when bars around here have specials on domestics. Yet "domestic" doesn't include Colorado brews that are brewed in state.

I've argued that point on many occassion myself, "Hmm, Sam Adams and Goose Island are made in this country, that makes them domestic. Why can't I get a bottle for $2?" I usually get an answer that goes something like, "Well, you know what we mean." No, no I don't.

We have a local (very hick) bar just down the street from my office that we used to use for its convenience - before we built a patio for Friday evenings in good weather, but I digress - The last time I was in said tavern, I went to the bar for a beer and 2 ladies ahead of me asked the bar tender what imports were available, "Well, we've got Heinekens, Becks, and Leinenkugels."

Now, I know to some Illinois folk, Wisconsin is a foreign land, but I been there - you don't need a passport or birth certificate to cross the border! I just hung my head in dismay. To add to the ignorance, I don't think the 2 girls ordering beer even knew better, they ordered the Heineken(s).

I drank the Moretti!

The Moretti LaRossa is pretty tasty - anyone had the Doppio Malto?

Buttwiper. They were there first, and they can have the moniker. SNPA is a Micro, and no matter how big they get they will always be a Micro in my eyes.

So Buttwiper and the like can be Domestic... and SN, Goose Island, New Belgium and their cohorts can be AMERICAN. Capiche? :)

It's true. I was at a wedding in Spartanburg, South Carolina about five years ago, and I stopped in a beer store. Before I checked out the selection, I asked the clerk if they carried any microbrewed beer, and she responded "Sorry, we don't carry that brand of beer here". Brand? Huh?

I have good news for myself. I found out that it is slow at work and I don't have to go, so I decided to pick up a couple of beers. My problem, micros and good import don't exist in my immediate area. I buy from a store down the street from work which is an hour away. I can get Guinness, PU and SNPA at the local stores. That's it other than macro's. That is till today, I decided to stop by a store and pick up some Guinness and when I walked up to their sorry selection I discovered, the usuals plus a selection of Flying Fish, SNPA including Celebration Ale marked down to $5.99. They also had Spatan Oktoberfest, and a few more. Maybe not the largest selection but it's a good start for my area. Think I'm gonna keep going back there so it looks like there is a boom in good macro's and hopefully they will keep adding to there stock. After all, you can never have enough beer in the fridge, right?

So anyway, I got 12 SN Celebration Ale for $12.70 after tax. Not bad for my area!!!

I spent probably about a half an hour trying to figure out what to get. I ended up with a 6 of New Belgium Biere de Mars, and a 22 of SKA's Nefarious Ten Pin Porter (Imperial porter).

I was also considering Avery's Ellie's Brown and The Beast, Left Hand's Imperial Stout (and their oak aged version), Allagash, Ommegang, Stone's Arrogant Bastard, Ruination and Old Guardian, Flying Dog's Horn Dog barley wine, Anchor porter and SNPA.

Supermarket Liquors has a bad habit of selling beer that is very close to its due date. Beware, beware!

Used to go there a whole lot in my younger days when a friend of mine lived east of town. Not a bad place, but look at what you're buying verrrry carefully...

Well I guess the Mexican purchases were not such a great idea. I drank 2 beers and the other (17?) people drank a total of 2 beers - a Fat Tire and a 90 Shilling. The Margs went really quickly though, and there was a bit of beer drinking at an early stop for the progressive dinner (I had a New Belgium Abbey!). Now I still have 5 regular Dos Equis left...super.

OK... so, since you've had both, tell us if you think there's a comparison between Arrogant Bastard and SN Bigfoot. I noticed similarities, but everyone else here says that they're not comparable, and I'm wondering if I just need to try them side by side one day when I'm back in CO...

Here are my reviews:
Arrogant Bastard (http://www.realbeer.com/discussions/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2952)

Bigfoot (http://www.realbeer.com/discussions/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2685)

From what I remember, the Bigfoot was a bigger less mature beer. Both were big on hops. I thought the hops on the Arrogant Bastard were much better balanced by the citrus/grapefruit tones. The Arrogant Bastard seemed to me like a really well done (and strong) IPA. Whereas the Bigfoot was much more comples (being a barely wine). I can definitely see some similarities between the two.

Maybe I'll have to crack a Bigfoot next. Although I think a 22 of AB followed by a Bigfoot will probably kick my butt for the night. :D

Finally picked up the 2004 edition of Bigfoot yesterday. Have yet to drink one. I also picked up some Avery White Rascal, which is their version of a Belgian style wheat beer. (I never had this one before, but I haven't had an Avery that I didn't like yet.)

Big bonus yesterday was that Murphy's Stout in the widgit can was on sale for a ridiculous $26.00 a case. I stocked up for the long haul!

One of the best paint stores in the Minneapolis area is called Blue Max. It's on the other side of the metro from where I live, so I only get over there once and a while. Made the trip this weekend and this is what I got:
Bell's Expedition Stout
Bell's Consecrator Dopplebock
Bell's Batch 6000
Flying Dog Horndog Barleywine
Lake Superior Old Man Winter Barleywine
Old Engine Oil Special Reserve (based on a review I read in another thread)
Westmalle Dubbel (recently had the tripel, wanted to round it out)
Achel Bruin

Could have picked up many, many more Belgians, but the tab was starting to get up there, so I stopped with what I listed above. Guess I'll have to reduce my inventory and go back! :p

I had a few wisdom teeth (3rd molars) out yesterday, so I decided to take a trip to AJ's and see what the hype was about. I came home very impressed and with a pretty good stash. I might be able to drink a few tonight. I picked up mostly porters and stouts. The pales are for company who can't appreciate my tastes :)

-Flying Dog, Classic Pale Ale
-Mendocino BC Black Hawk Stout
-Mendocine BC Ble Heron Pale Ale
-Sierra Nevada Stout
-Sierra Nevada Porter
-Ruedrich's Red Seal Ale
-Sonoran Burning Bird Pale Ale
-Sonoran Desert Amber
-Sonoran Inebriator
-Mackeson XXX
-Original Black Flag Porter
-Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout
-Black Butte Porter
-Anchor Porter
-Grant's Perfect Porter

I've had a few of these before, but it's been a while. Has anyone seen any Great Lakes brews around this area? I used to live in MI, and I'm missing them.

Want to try the 120 but the cost up here in Alaska was a little steep. Will try it next time. And had another old engine oil from Harviestoun Brewery. Well I now need a nap. Had the Oskar Blues Dale's Pale Ale in a can when I was down at the Craft Brewer's Conference in San Diego a couple weeks ago and was very impressed. That was a great beer. A few local brewers and I are talking about buying a canning line and sharing it so we can all get our beers in places we don't have them. I was very impressed with the canning machinery and the quality of the beer that was canned. Hopefully we can pull it off.

Thanks, Beaver. I hope it works out. That was the first time I've had that beer so, unfortunately, I have no basis for comparison. However, I was kind of expecting some sort of off flavor, namely oxidation, but was really pleasantly surprised. I'm not really sure when the beer I had was canned, though. It would be interesting to get another can and run an air test on it. Just for curiosities sake. Overall, though, I was really impressed.

...all right, here we go; this past weekend, fellow forumite Bluesnbrews, myself, and two other friends made a beer roadtrip of epic proportions...we stopped at two liquor stores in Illinois, one in Indiana, and went directly to Three Floyd's for some samples and plenty of carry out.
So without further ado; my take:

Three Floyds Gumball Head wheat beer - 4 bombers
Three Floyds Dreadnaught IIPA - 2 bombers

Stone IPA - 1 sixpack
Stone Ruination - 2 bombers
Stone Arrogant Bastard - 2 bombers
Stone 030303 Vertical Epic - 1 bomber
Stone 040404 Vertical Epic - 1 bomber

Victory Prima Pils - 1 sixpack

Founders Dirty Bastard Scotch Ale - 1 sixpack

Lefthand Imperial Stout - 1 bomber

Avery Eleven - 2 bombers

Duvel - 2 bottles (with free tulip glass)

Sticke Uerige Dusseldorf Altstatt (German Alt)- 1 bottle

BurgerBrau Roggenbier (German rye beer) - 1 bottle

Hanssens Mead the Gueze (Belgium),a blend of Gueze and Lurgashall mead - 1 bottle

Arcadia Whitsum Ale (free from liquor store)

Now I was the most conservative of the group; my take added up to about $100, Bluesnbrews dropped about $300 and another buddy over $500! (of course, a full case of Dreadnaught will get you on your way!)

Maybe Bluesnbrews will offer up his list ;)

I'm normally not a big converser, but it's easy when talking good beer!

They had a good selection of 6 packs - Deschutes is new to our state. They also had 4 big shelves of warm, rare beer - lots of Dogfish Head, Hair of the Dog, Allagash, Unibroue, Avery, Rogue, plus quality beers from Belgium, Germany, and Italy - from what I can remember.

There's also a very cool place on the south side of Loveland - Taft and Hwy 402, near King Soopers grocery store - that has a great selection, including a "mystery sixer" for about $7 that comes wrapped in a paper bag. They promise only imports and micros to be in there - I'm waiting to get brave enough to do it...

1) Sierra Nevada bigfoot barley wine '04

3) Westy 12
4) Rochefort 10
5) Three Floyds Dreadnaught IIPA
6) Stone Ruination IPA
7) Three Floyds DarkLord Imperial Stout '04 (we bought a case the day it went on sale)
8) Stone Imperial Stout '03
9) Stone IPA
10) Sierra Nevada bigfoot barley wine '04

Bluesnbrews and I wiped these out in a marathon taste test one evening.

The next morning we headed to Libertville, IL to meet up with Steveh and sample some more fine beverages, including some cask conditioned offerings.

The Darklord will be better in year or two...my cellared bottles still have about three inches of sediment that hasn't dropped yet; perhaps by Christmas it may be ready to re-evaluate.

All in all, some wonderful brews...

Friday and Saturday were exceptional if you are a guitar player. There were seminars with many of the folk involved, including a very informative hour with Jeff "Skunk" Baxter. There were also the Guitarmaggedon finals and winners on the stage, plus a lot of mini concerts going on all over. No style of music seemed to be excluded. Also, plenty of vendors on hand to make you part with hard earned $$$, which managed to get much more of mine that I should have ever parted with. (Great deals on guitars and support merchadise abounded.) Oddly, my wife was more than understanding of my excesses...has me worried as to what she has in mind for the upcoming months!

Sunday was the big show. It started at 10:30 in the morning and ran to nearly midnight, utilizing two stages almost non-stop. The list of names goes on forever, and includes but is not limited to:
Sonny Landreth, Doyle Bramhall II, Jimmie Vaughan, Jeff Beck, Booker T. and the MG's (yes, with Steve Cropper and Donald "Duck" Dunn), Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Carlos Santana(perhaps the best set of the day), Eric Clapton, ZZ Topp, and many many others. The actual show was scheduled to run another set after the ZZ Topp set(which turned out to be the last of the night), but a line of storms was rapidly moving in and so the "All Star Jam" was cancelled. It was a fantastic lineup, with some really great performances.

The list was too expansive...I'm telling you. If I try to list them all, I will no doubt leave some of them out. And then, of course, there were certain acts that I had no real burning desire to sit through, and those provided an opportunity to go and watch the skimpily dressed gals that were all over the place, and to purchase some psuedo beer.

I will also add that Jonny Lang is one hell of a guitar player. It was the first time that I had ever seen him live. Another "kid" that turned out to be pretty impressive as a picker was John Mayer.

And Joe Walsh really seemed to be having a blast with his set. He even did some old James Gang stuff, and also had some of the others including EC sit on his set.

Robert Randoph is someone who totally took me by surprise. I was unfamiliar with him...he plays the blues, a very high voltage style of the blues, on, of all things, a pedal steel. He kicked some major ass! The band he had was really tight as well!

I didn't take in Styx or any of the "metal" set like Andy Timmons or Stevie Vai. Just too much to do and too little time to do it all!

Yeah, his "pop" success aside, I've seen and heard (live radio appearances) Mayer live and been impressed with his guitar prowess. Look for him soon on a public television Soundstage appearance with Buddy Guy. He's also a pretty likeable and humble guy when interviewed, that prompted me to pick up his first album.

I saw Randolph along with EC in the Royal Albert Hall. I too was astonished at what he does with a pedal steel. I think he also has a new album out.

EC played here in Washington last night and I did not go. My buddy whom attended the Albert Hall concert with me did and he said the show was as good. He liked the RAH venue better but the playing was as good here in MCI Center. I also heard that Randolph got a standing ovation at the end of his set here.

...I think I saw that duo on Austin City Limits a few months ago; I don't get Soundstage on my local PBS, so it wasn't that show.
You are correct, he is a MUCH better guitarist than most give him credit for.
He and Buddy looked to be having a lot of fun doing a little "head-cutting"...

The Domestic/Micro distinction is an example of how human language is a living, non-precise system. Consider this thought the next time you find yourself steeped in that warm glow of love and oneness that only a well made beer can give you. Bars can't exactly say that their 'sh!tty' beers are on sale!?! I will call them 'domestics', and curl my lip in a way that would make my mother feint with shame and disgust when I do. :D

Since this thread has come to life again I would like to thank Fret for recommending Odell's 90 Schilling. I picked up a six pack earlier this summer and was very happy with the results. I also grabbed a six pack of SN Summerfest and was very pleased as well.

Oh, yeah...I'll vouch for the 90 Shilling. I shared that rare find with a German couple camped next to us on the north rim of the Grand Canyon. Soon as I could get back to an area with a little population (Cortez, CO), I went and found some more. I'm rather fond of their porter, too.

I'm a "when in Rome" type of guy. We travel a lot, so when I get to a new area, one of the first things I do is scope out the local beer store. Drink what the locals drink. I even cruise by the cooler at most convenience stores, hoping at any moment I'll hit on a gem. Happens sometimes.

Skahtboi, you might want to ease just a bit west, to Fort Worth, and find a Majestic Liquor. They have a fantastic beer selection. Would they have Odell products? I dunno. The thrill is in the hunt!

Sitting in my beer fridge right now:

Pyramid IPA (underwhelming)
New Belgium Loft beer (yum)
Full Sail Rip Curl Ale (YUM!)
Real Ale Full Moon Rye Pale Ale (sublime)

Bellgium
Maredsous 10 Triple

Thanks, Chaz. I actually had the Bitter and Twisted last weekend. I thought it was a wonderful beer although at first it was not quite what I had expected. I was expecting more of a hoppy, American style IPA or something, but I guess if I had read the label beforehand, I wouldn't have been surprised. In the end though, I thoroughly enjoyed the beer and can only imagine how much better it would be on cask.

P.S. Interesting note on the label says it is bottled with 1/3 less carbonation than most beers. I noticed it was not fizzy like macros, and the carbonation was light, but very appropriate. Not flat by any means.

Don't know.
I call my orders in and didn't ask about bottles.

My guess is that they do not because I asked if he (the proprietor) had any Storm King in kegs, and his response seemed to imply that he had not seen any this season, as of yet.

He is calling me back today to verify-

The only thing I have going for me is that we are about an hour away from Victory Brewing's location.

I had Gordon Biersch's Schwartzbier today. It is the current seasonal. I found it to be very thin and a bit disappointing. (Sorry Jason). While schwarz is a style I'm generally fond of because it is usually somewhat subtler than it's cousin styles this one was fairly lacking in any sort of roasted or chocolate malt character at all. Don't get me wrong as I prefer my schwartzes to be on the milder side but the Dunkle I had after it was more flavorful.

I don't know if they actually monitor our Net usage at my firm, or if they just say they are (I suspect the latter since the sys admin isn't smart enough to know HOW), but if they ARE I figure checking my personal email now and then won't hurt, but to see "realbeer.com" on the log?

If someone made a passable barleywine with 1% ABV, I'd probably have it for breakfast! Better than coffee, if you ask me! :D

I just had one last night that I had aged about 9 months. I didn't notice a ton of difference. I liked it a little better, and it was smoother than I recall, but the alcohol was still pretty noticeable. I'll age my other one longer and see how that goes. :)

That one was for you, Steve

Me Steve? Something to do with a lost e-mail list? I liked Mr. Gleason in that, but enjoyed him more as Dwayne T. Robinson!

me[/i] have to WORK to pay for their beer? I swear y'all are posting here 24/7 and I can't keep up with you.

I heard that! This place is outta hand!

Hey, it's all relative. Come March, I won't have two seconds to post here during the day until September! Just because ya'll have a job that's busy year round, doesn't mean the rest of us shouldn't have fun!

Now, what movie are YOU thinking of....? Because I'm almost certain you got it wrong (unless they quoted the movie you're thinking of in the movie I'M thinking of...).

No, just showing my penchant for useless minutia in talking about the character actor that played parts in both movies.

S.

And the "e-mail list" had nothing to do with the movie, just a list of favorites.

Okay - gotcha. Saw only a little bit of that movie; wasn't enthralled enough to stick around. Not sure what happened...

Hey - did you pick a fave beer yet?
