Brewed an IPA yesterday, and used White Labs Burton Ale Yeast. No action yet today, and this is weird for me. Should it take more than 24 hours to work?

Definitely no cause for alarm yet. A number of factors could influence the length of time it takes to start. Age of yeast, wort aeration, wort temp, starter, etc... Even when all of the factors are dead on it can take longer than it seemingly should. I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised shortly.

For me after about 36 hours I would start to be concerned. After that amount of time I would start considering pitching another tube. I bet it takes off though.

So what if I went ahead and used the dry yeast packet that came with the kit? Should I make a starter for it? How long would that take, and would my wort suffer without yeast in it?

So it kicked in? Excellent.

It kicked in so hard that I had to remove the airlock and install a blowoff tube! Maybe I'll just start with one of those from now on and save myself the drama... :)

I left the hops (pellets) in the primary this time... could that have slowed it down any?

The hops should have nothing to do with it. Some just take longer to get going.
I only put a blowoff tube on when my OG is in excess of 1 .060 (or so), under that typically won't hit the airlock in my 6.5 gal carboys.
I had to put one on with my AHS "Steamroller Stout" which started out at 1.074...I can't wait to try it!

THere are so many variables that impact fermentation it's nearly impossible to anticipate when it's going to start off.
Usually I will agitate my wort every 8 hours or so until I see the tiny patches of bubbles forming in the circular pattern that indicates something's happening.
Also, if I agitate it and the airlock bubbles more than normal, I know that some c02 is being produced and things will be happening soon.

Heeheehee.... when I pulled out the airlock, there was krausen on the bottom of it... :D

SG was 1.055, so I guess I'm close to your cutoff point. This is the HOPPIEST beer I've ever made, to be sure!

BTW, I've still got a plastic bucket fermenter... gonna have to stick with this until after the big move. I HATE missing out on all the cool visual stuff...

You sure? I know there are none in FC. :(

I think the closest is Boulder or northern Denver.

I think I have most of the equipment. I bought it all in college maybe 7 years ago, I just haven't used it.

This is my goal for the new year though!

There used to be a store on... hmmm... let's see: Mason St. goes north, and there's a Kinko's on the NE corner somewhere north of Mulberry. If you turn there and make an IMMEDIATE left into the same shopping center where Kinko's is, isn't there a shop there? I remember seeing it the last time I was in town...

If not, post what you've got, and I'll tell you what you're missing, ok?

How long ago were you last in town? It doesn't sound familiar to me, but I'll head over there and check sometime.

I'll try to get out all the stuff soon and post it, thanks!

Im with fretless I have had it happen so much that i just start right off with a blowoff tube.....I usually transfer to secondary early 3-4 days and ferment is still fairly strong after a week or so its always ok to goto an airlock and it makes me feel a whole lot better knowing the headspace is full of co2....because topping up with water is like against my religion
