Are there any brands of bottles from beer that seem to work best for homebewing?(i.e. are some tougher than others and hold up longer than a weaker bottle)

I've never actually had any break, but the best bottles seem to be the ones used for returnables. They are much heavier and thicker than the throwaway sixers from Sam Adams and the rest....

Of course, most of the stuff that comes in returnable cases is macro swill, but there are a few halfway decent beers you can get by the case....

I avoid twist offs, they don't recap very well, the best are the pop tops, it also helps if they have a sharper, more pronounced shoulder under the part that the actual cap holds on to. This lends itself towards a better hold on the bottle while you cap it, unless you use a bench capper.

I don't know about durability, that would all depend on the glass that was used.

Color is another plus, the darker colored bottles will allow less light in decreasing your chances of gettng Light Struck skunky beer.

The ultimate are the EZ cap, or Grolsch style bottles, they are a bit more expensive, but really cool.

The only bottles that I have ever had chip when I popped the tops off of were some Corona bottles. I don't know if they had been recycled or not, there's no way to tell.

Don't laugh, but I've bottled in plastic water bottles before. It held the carbonation beautifully, no explosions, and attributed no weird aftertaste to the beer. Problem is that you have to keep the bottles in a dark place, or run the risk of skunking the brew since most water bottles are clear. I bottled in glass for years until I had a couple of bottles burst on me. It was then that the wife gave me an ultimatum. So, that worked out until I started kegging.

My brother in law bottled in reused 2 litre bottles, but the caps leaked and all of them went bad....plus, once you open one, you have to finish it off.....hmmm, maybe he was on to something there!!

I have heard several Bottle Bomb stories!! Most of them involved a homebrewer that didn't use thier Hydrometer!
