Has anyone read the 2 volume "A Textbook on Brewing" by Jean de Clerck? I've been thinking about picking this up for a while, but was have resisted to this point owing to the price tag and my lack of deep technical knowledge of brewing. Now I have homebrewed and know my alpha acids from my strike rate and what not, but would this be a worthwhile investment for someone whith a serious interest in brewing but no immediate (long term, who knows) plans to get involved in the trade. Does it require advanced study in either chemistry, biology, or mathematics? Does it in any way, shape, or form make good general beer reading?

I have read most of it. It's not the most interesting reading. It was written so long ago, I would suggest picking up a newer book, such as Brewing by Dr. Michael Lewis. Still not overly gripping, it will give you a good basis of the science behind the processes of malting through brewing.

I have it sitting here on my shelf, I read it once and have not really used it since. There are more current authors out there that are a much "easier" read such as Dr. Lewis and Dr. Fix.
