T.D. Ridley and Sons, Essex, England
16.9 oz bottle, 4.3% ABV
I received this beer as the latest in monthly offerings from The Michael Jackson Real Beer Tour, beer of the month club -- blatant plug.
This porter pours a dark ruby color with a huge, craggy, soap-suds, light tan head that settles quickly, leaving a good cap and clingy lace on the glass.
Toffee-caramel, chocolate, with subtle coffee aromas - very inviting. Warm fermented, black cherry fruitiness and slight sulfur/diacetyl aromas develop as the beer warms.
Roasted malt flavor with sweet toffee back. Dry, roasted bitterness in finish, but not at all harsh.
Thin to medium body, surprising. From the impressions left by the aromas, I expected a thick and chewy, filling beer.
A very nice beer for an especially cold Monday evening.
Side Tasting notes: As an experiment, I paired some Ghirardelli dark chocolate with the last 1/3 of the glass of porter. Nice flavor mix, but the candy may have actually overpowered the flavors of the porter.
