uh, perhaps somebody could 'splain this to me, are we talking fusion here? it's been awhile since high school chemistry...

us homebrewers can do something similar, just forget to turn off the heat when you add the malt extract (liquid works best for this, since it sinks so well), you'll carmelize it but good...
