I can use a few recommendations for dining out in London. I’ll be staying in the Kensington area. I’m willing to travel across town to try something worthy and could use a few tips on some local places that are good for a quick bite.

Places serving “Pie and Mash” and/or places serving odd or hard to find traditional British dishes.

I'm looking for some real good ethnic restaurants anywhere in London - no funk, no fusion, nothing fancy. I prefer places that cater to recent immigrants.

Banh Mi - Vietnamese sandwiches in London?

Any Burmese, Lao or Cambodian places in London?

Good Indian restaurants? I’d like to find a place serving Kashmiri dishes (or other regional specialties)

Good Thai places? I’d be happy with a place that offers some northern Thai dishes served with sticky rice

Best cheap eats/drunk food in around Notting Hill Gate Tube station? (falafel, fish & chips, pizza)

pie and mash (http://www.viewlondon.co.uk/home_feat_where_cockneygrub.asp)

Also worth a visit is
borough market (http://www.boroughmarket.org.uk/entrance.html)
especially Neals Yard for English cheeses.

Lots of ethnic choices around. There are some good chinese around soho on Gerrard St (Leicester square tube ) and Indian just about everywhere.

Here's a reliable guide:
London Eats (http://www.londoneats.com)
Click on search and you can search by cuisine type and underground stop.

I was going to recommend Gerrard Street too for Chinese. There are plenty of Thai and Indian restraunts all over. For lunches if you are near Knightsbridge, Try the food court at Harrods.

Even though it's a chain, All Bar One is good. The sticky toffee pudding is pure heaven. Unfortunately I don't think they have any cask, but the Spice of Life is right near by, maybe even across the street IIRC.

Goddard's Pie Shop in Greenwich is a must. You want pie and mash, this is yer man. Nothing fancy, but it's been a family run institution for 5 generations. You can even get your pie with liquor (it's not what you think!).

And I forgot, there is a Hard Times Chili Parlor in London now. It is a lsmall local chain in our area here that has pretty decent chili and usually a good selection of beers. Old Dominion makes the Hard Times Select Lager. I know that they opened one in London and can get the address if you like.

I can highly recommend a Burmese restaurant called the Mandalay on Edgware Road. It could not be described as plush, but the food is good, the prices cheap (by London standards) and the people very friendly. Some informationabout it at these sites

And you can easily build a trip there into vistis to two excellent pubs - the Warrington (Warrington Crescent) and the Warwick Castle (Warwick Place, Little Venice)

I don't know any Kashmiri restaurants, but there is a pretty good Nepalese one called the Great Nepalese (Eversholt Street) right by Euston Station. The nearby Head of Steam bar in Euston station precinct (but not actually in the station) has a very good range of beers.

For more general Indian food, Brick Lane is a good place for cheap eats. The Pride of Spitalfields pub in Heneage Street, just off Brick Lane is the place to go for a beer aperatif.

In Notting Hill Gate, You can eat Thai food and drink Fullers beer at the same time in the previously mentioned Churchill Arms (Kensington Church Street) just down from the tube, but it isn't really an area for cheap eats.

Thanks for all the tips and special thanks to chris_o
with the Nepalese tip and the places to drink before the Burmese place. I'll be quaffing real ale in just a few day! Thanks!

Well I for one am jealous. However, I will be at Fabfest in Miami Thursday - Sunday and plan on enjoying some fine British cask ales there. I won't be back in the UK until May:(

That looks like a good event. There are plenty of British beers that I haven't tried on the list. Curiously they are almost all from breweries in the West Country. Any idea why?
