GREAT ARIZONA BEER FESTIVAL PUB CRAWL
What: The Great Arizona Beer Festival hosts a pub crawl featuring some of the beers that will be served at the festival.
When: 2-8 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 26.
Where: Bars and restaurants in downtown Tempe.
Admission: $10.
Details: 480-774-8300, azbeer.com.
The Great Arizona Beer Festival's annual bar crawl Saturday kicks off the state's largest beer festival.
The bar crawl features four Tempe bars that are either participants in the March 5 festival at Tempe Beach Park, or sponsors -- Dave's Electric Brewpub, Canteen Modern Tequila Bar, Robbie Fox's Public House and Gordon Biersch Brewery and Restaurant.
The crawl last year featured bars along the light rail, but organizers have simplified things this year.
"It was more difficult to coordinate last year and a challenge to corral everyone to each bar," said organizer Eric Adams. "It's walkable now and still right by the light rail, so we still encourage people to use it to get to Tempe."
More than 300 people are expected. Participants will get about an hour and a half to enjoy food and drink discounts at each spot, which Adams said will be even cheaper than happy hour prices.
Gordon Biersch participated in the crawl last year, and brewmaster Dieter Foerstner said it's a great opportunity to showcase the variety of beers they brew.
"Since we're in such close proximity to the festival, we've always worked with the event and want to get people excited about it," Foerstner said. "We want to give people a taste of what they can expect at the festival, and will have great discounts on our German-style lagers."
The brewery's signature beers include Marzen Bavarian lager and Schwarzbier, and they'll serve up the leftover double red ale that was produced for Arizona Beer Week. Also on tap is Rauchbier, a smoked beer.
"We came up with our own recipe and it came out really nice," Foerstner said. "It . . . is a really rare style. Only two major breweries in the world produce it. It's not as smoky as other ones, and is slightly sweet."
All the bars will give away gift certificates, festival T-shirts and general admission tickets. Those who go to all four bars will be eligible to win two VIP tickets at the final stop, at Robbie Fox's Public House. Rock radio station KDKB (93.3) will be onsite playing music and announcing the prize giveaways.
Proceeds go to non-profit Sun Sounds of Arizona, which hosts the festival to raise money to provide reading services to the visually impaired.
