Almost 3,800 breweries in the EU produce about 427 mln hl of beer per year, which is a quarter of worldwide beer production and more than United States and China, EU President Herman Van Rompuy said at the Beer Serves Europe gala in Brussels on October, 12.

The total added value generated by the EU brewing industry annually is estimated at EUR59 bln.

Almost 20% of the beer produced in European countries is for export, of which 60% goes outside the EU. The most important target for export is the United States. The largest beer exporters are Belgium, Ireland, Denmark and the Netherlands.

Still, 95% of the European breweries have the typical European SME (small to medium sized enterprise) structure, Mr. Van Rompuy said.

The yearly beer consumption in Europe represents a total consumer spending of EUR124 billion. Almost 72% of this amount consists of turnover in pubs, bars and restaurants, the remaining part in supermarkets. Breweries also keep other sectors vital: agriculture, packaging industries and the services sector. In total, EUR25 billion a year is purchased in these sectors.

“It is partly because of the strength of the European breweries that the EU is still number one in hops and malts production,” Mr. Van Rompuy said.

Also the effect on employment is considerable: of about 2.5 million direct and indirect jobs, 6% are employed in the breweries, 6% in retail, 15% in supply and 73% in bars, restaurants and pubs.
