So I made a batch of stout Thursday night. All went well. Woke friday morning, getting really active. Krausen almost to the air lock within 9 hours. Put on blow off tube and went to work in the evening. Just got home and for some reason the brew room is hot as hell. The whole apartment is nice and cool, just how I like it and the spare room(brew room) that is usually the coldest room in the place(perfect fermenting temp) is now the hottest room in the place. My beer is up to 78-80 degrees and the blow off has filled the container with the sanitizer in it and over flowed krausen and yeasty stout mixture all over the place. Haven't really lost any beer. The foam is what made the mess. Now I have to figure out how to get the temp down in the room and the beer. It's only 10 degrees out so I don't think it's a good idea to crack a window. That will probably make it too cold by the time I get up. Oh well, just had to tell someone. My girl doesn't care about my beer so I figured I'd tell all of you!!!!

Did you ask her if she opened a vent in that room or something? Maybe your neighbors downstairs now all of a sudden have to have that room very warm because someone is sick, and since heat rises you're also (ahem) BENEFITING from their situation. How strange!

Cracking a window about 1/2" really shouldn't be a problem - just monitor the situation as best you can. And RE-SANITIZE EVERYTHING THAT COULD TOUCH THAT BEER. What a drag!

And your girl doesn't care about your beer? That's too bad... my wife hates beer, but loves to see me drink it because she says I get such a happy look on my face when I do! :)

This place isn't really like that. It has the hot water floor-board heaters and it just kinda warms the whole apartment. Maybe something has been clogged the last 2 years I lived here and it finally pasted though. I don't know, It's cooling off in here now. I don't know what made it so hot in here.
As far as my girl, she doesn't like beer that much but she is supportive of my addiction, I mean hobby! I always show her some new gadgit I'm all excited about and I always forget she's not really interested. At least she acts interested!!

Go to Wal-Mart or K-Mart and get one of those plastic tubs, they are about $8. You know the ones with the plastic rope handles and look they can hold a keg. Put the carboy in it, and fill it with water so that it comes up around the carboy, I would say about 2/3 up the side. This should help bring the temp down, you might also add a tray or 2 of ice cubes at intervals to keep the water bath cool.

It may actually be a bit late for this batch, but it can be used on later batches from the start.

Hope this helps.

The temp in the room dropped back to where is is supposed to be. I have never had this problem before and it only did it that one day. Unfortunately, it decided to do it just as I started a batch. So yeah, the damage has been done to this one. Now all I can due is wait it out and see how bad it got. It was way too high for too long so I know it had it's effect on the beer.

So I think I may have an idea. When I get ready to put it to the secondary, I always taste it. If is showing signs of fusel alcohols and diacetyl, think it would work to maybe try to turn the stout into say a cherry stout. It seems to me that I would notice it less if there was a bit of cherry sweetness instead of the dry stout by itself. I know it will still be noticable, but maybe not as much.

It kind sucks this happened to the batch that will be my first kegged beer. I want to try to make the best of it.
