I just got my IPA converting in the mash tun. No problems hitting my temp this time.
Homebrewing is good.

what's the emotion i'm feeling? ...ah...it's "envy". :)
my arrogant bastard clone will have to wait until next weekend: no cash for a propane tank and it's going to be 0*F in boston this weekend.

Right on, Tweek. Sorry I couldn't make it today, but next time you brew, let me know and we'll have to drink some beer.
Cheers!

Well boys and girls, it turns out that it was rookie day at teh old Tweek house hold. If I had known that this morning I would have waited until tomorrow to brew. Sadly I had no warning so I went ahead with the brew plans.
I missed my target gravity by a friggin mile. I am not sure why I didnt check my conversion but I didnt. I ended up with an extra gallon as well to just make matters worse. I got a ton of cold break in my fermenter and my line got plugged 3 times while I was trying to fill my carboy.
Well it will still be beer. With some luck it will still be good beer.
Cheers!

If the only issue was that you used too much mash/sparge water, then that could account for the low OG and the extra gallon. All is not lost.
As for the plugged line, I often notice that I will get vapor lock, both when sparging the mash, and when transferring from kettle to fermenter. If you raise/lower the tubing it sometimes helps get the flow going again.
In other words, it's probably not nearly as bad as you think... :)
