As a lark Brian at the Reef got this for his weekly cask night. I'm not a big cider fan. It's not that I don't like 'em, I just usually prefer something else. I've only ever had one Real Cider in my life and I quite enjoyed it but I'm still not beating the doors down to get more. Anyhow this is what was on last night and I'm always one to try that which can not normally be got. It came served in a 5 gallon plastic "keg", which from what I've seen is the most common format for Real Cider. It was poured gravity tap, as all casks are at the Reef. The drink itself was cloudy yellow, I guess no surprise there, and there was the tart, lambic, brettanomyces like nose with a hint of mild apple. The intial taste didn't have the sharpness of the nose, but it was there, though well balanced, in the aftertaste. Decent mouthfeel and a tasty drink. I ended up having 4, which is about twice the amount of cider I would normally drink, but I wanted to support the proceeding and all that. The 7.5% made itself known after about 1 1/2 12oz glasses. While I would pronounce this an excellent drink, but between the restrained sweetness and the alcohol, it's a bit tough to work into sessioning. Hey, I think I just made that word up. For the record I'm not sure what stripe of apples are used, but I'll see if I can find out.

Anyhow, I'm looking forward to the Wye Valley Winter Tipple next week when we can get back to proper cask business.
