I just thought I'd note that I found a site selling Ranco digital temperature controllers for $65 plus S/H. That's the best price I could find on a brand new digital controller. William's Brewing, for instance, carries a similar one for $99 + s/h. See http://www.williamsbrewing.com/AB1605000/showprod.cfm?&DID=7&CATID=12&ObjectGroup_ID=72
The site is: http://www.diyreef.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=22&products_id=37
Note that the site is NOT a homebrewing site but the controller is the same as sold by Northern Brewer for $80+s/h. See http://www.northernbrewer.com/chilling-etc.html
My wonderful wonderful wife (I hope she somehow reads this) surprised the heck outta me and actually put it in my stocking this past Christmas. SWEET.
Anyhoo, the specs are as follows:
Ranco ETC Single Stage digital temperature controller
Easy to read LCD display shows current temperature
1 to 30 degree F differential (adjustable)
Temperature in degrees F or C
Has "cooling" and "heating" mode
Has a 2" watertight sensor on a 8 foot cord.
Simply program in the temperature setpoint and differential (3-5F is probably good for homebrewing), plug the freezer in and you are all set.
"Woke up this mornin', had them Statesboro Brews..."
