What's your favorite beer style? Sorry in advance if I leave any out.

Man, that's tough to fit into only 10 categories! ;)
At this point in time, mine is porters.

IPA/ESB My usual choices. But I love all beer.

Really depends on the season not to mention mood. My usual in winter is different than my usual in summer, etc.
In general I would have to say Bitter/Scotch ale or Helles/Dunkel as utility beers if forced to choose.

I chose stouts, but i have to sayit all depends on what kinda mood I'm in. Wish I could choose 2 so I could add IPA/ESB. Usually make sure I have a stock of both. They seem to be the two choices i grab on a regular basis.

IPA baby! I love porters, too.
The next porter or imperial stout I make is going to have a pinch of dry-hopping, if that's not too crazy.

Sierra Nevada Porter is still the be all/end all beer for me! :)

well i think it's fairly obvious, i like i.p.a.'s double i.p.a.'s ....uh, do they make a triple i.p.a.?
but i do have a sweet tooth for trappist ales as well. which are probably my faves, but i gotta have my hops man! so if i had to give one up it'd be the trappist...uh ...did i say that ? not the trappists' NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I'm a hophead, too. Gimme an IPA and I'll be happy. I always have at least one kind of Pale/Bitter/IPA in the fridge at any given time.
But I try to mix it up and drink a wide variety. Lately I've been trying more stouts. Troegs Oatmeal Stout has been very good to me over the holidays!
And if the porter/stout categories were combined, they'd be neck and neck with the Pale/Bitter/IPA cat right now, with Belgians not far behind...

I sorta took this question to be predicated on the notion of "If you were stuck on a desert island and had to pick one style of beer what would it be?"

Not necessarily - how about being stranded on a rocky crag of an island off the coast of Greenland

While I like almost all styles of beer, if I had to pick only one type to drink all the time it would be Barleywines, with English style over American style.

It really was a toss up between Belgian and wheat...so I flipped a coin and it came up wheat. Although I usually reserve the wheat for summer time.

Tough call between Belgian and strong/dark/barleywine. I love high gravity dark beers.
Incidentally, what happens if you make a dubbel with ingredients for a stout? strong/dark, or something else?

I like my doppelbock although I usually like my lambic more. IPAs, no problem here. Barleywine, bring it on. British Mild, pour me one. A porter or stout, yummy. At this point all I can say, is most any real beer is a good beer.

I voted other. This is because I have a different favorite depending on my mood, time of year and even what I am having at a meal. So I can't choose one style as my #1.

I am known to be able to enjoy a wide variety of styles one right behind the other. My friends are amazed at times as I go from a milsd beer to a really heavy hopped IPA eithout batting an eyelid. That being said, my favorite is barelywine. My wife too enjoys that style as I mentioned before. At one pub I frequneted, before being a Dad, would let me have 3 Imperial pints while everyone esle got one and a half.

A great barleywine (Brooklyn Monster for me) is, well, great, but bit not the easiest style to have everyday! Then there's ESB's, Altbiers, Wassails -- hey, does Steam count? Then Ambers and Darks... what was the question?

01-12-2004, 08:56 PM
Good call on the steam. Well, I decided to give lagers some love - I just can't get enough Great Lakes Dortmunder Gold; it's what some Pale Ales should aspire to be, and it's (gasp!) a lager...

Steam...uh, California Common is a lager fermented at ale temperatures - the first hybrid beer.

With the incredible diversity of "Belgian" beers, to lump "them" all in one category misses the mark, seems to me.
So, to scope in on why I would hazard to check such a diverse category: Dark, Artisanal Ale.
Gimme a St. Bernardus Abt or a Gouden Carolous or a Westvleteren 12 or a Westmalle or, even better yet, a Rochefort 10, and I'm in heaven!
...but that's me.

Why thanks Fret! I have been traveling since last Thursday and have been in and out. I'll post the list of cask ales I had at the Fabfest in Miami soon. This week I am attending a breweriana (brewery collectables) show in Fredericksburg, VA. We will be serving over 50 different kegs of microbrews from all over the country. Most were donated by the breweries. And next week I'll be on the road much of the week as well. I am buying a new beach place and I am trying to negotiate with the decorator for the model furniture. But I hope to be on the computer a bit in between. Have you tried the Coniston yet?
I tried a new bottle conditioned ale at Fabfest called Titanic. The English brewer was there and he got the recipe from an old book. It is a traditional IPA. I'll tell more on this soon in the tasting notes. It was the only bottled beer I sampled at Fabfest. I only drank the English cask ales (I had 39 tastings). I even skipped the Florida micros that were there. I'll post more later.

I find that that listing is WAAAAAAYYYYY out of date. There are ones listed that have been closed for years.
I use Pubcrawler.com and BeerAdvocate.com's Beerfly section the most. These 2 have user reviews (often need to be taken with a grain of salt), location specific searches and links to most of the websites (if the place has one). Very helpful to check these first, then check the pub's site -- many have current tap offerings, events, etc.
I'm going to Lake Placid in March and there are 2 BP's there, both with favorable reviews! I'm psyched!

I would have to say Stout is my favorite and Samuel Adams Imperial Stout is my favorite Commercial Beer. Sierra Nevada has a very good Porter(imo) and I tried my first Smoked Beer last week. That was great and may replace the Imperial Stout as my #1 favorite. However I can not afford to drink it abd seldom purchase it. It cost me $5 bucks for a 12 ounce bottle. Porters and Stouts have been the only beers I have brewed myself so far.

Bang:
Have you ever had an Alaskan Smoked Porter, a Samuel Smith's Taddy Porter, a Young's Double Chocolate Luxury Stout, an Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout, or, the best of the lot for my money, a Young's Oatmeal Stout? Those are all some damn fine entries into the porter/stout realm. I think if you tried any one of these fine beers, you would probably forget all about the SA Stout.

I was just downloading some of my Alaska trip pictures from 2002. There are a couple of me enjoying some 2001 smoked porter. I also have pictures of several Alaskan breweries. Fond memories of that trip and yes I have some of the smoked porter in my cellar.

For me it'd have to be stouts, made a coffee stout about 2 months back and it seriously has to be one of the best beers I've ever tasted.
However I'm rapidly growing a taste for wheat ales. There's just so many to choose from. Oh well
