has to be".....can anybody tell me what the hell this means? Surely neither "good enough" nor "better than it has to be" could be considered a ringing endorsement of their beer. It seems they are positing "better than it has to be" as a compliment...but is it?
To me it sounds like "We make this swill marginally better than the worst possible sewage we think we can con you into buying." But that's just me.
It's almost like somebody at the ad agency got struck by a pang of conscience or something, and couldn't bring himself to brag about the flavor anymore...."well, I guess this stuff is better than it absolutely has to be...I guess we can honestly say that..." How they got it approved by the client is beyond me though.
Oh...to the non-yanks among you, this is the theme of a current advertising campaign of one of our U.S. megabrewers.

I've wondered the same thing myself. After seeing these commercials ad nauseum for awhile now, I'm pretty sure they're targeting Bud Light. I like how in one of the commercials the voiceover guy says something like "You just want to nudge the boat, not rock it." I'm not sure if that's the exact verbage or not, but to me that means "You want better than Bud Light, but not much better. You're courageous enough to put down Bud LIght, but not enought to pick up something with flavor!" Seems to be a flawed campaign to me as well...

I think they are just trying to keep people drinking big 3 swill rather than trying somthing that tastes like beer.

I missed these! Is this the campaign for Miller? If so, I spent too much time looking at the commercials to listen to what they say. I STILL like these better than the mud wrasslin' babes, if only because they portray people who drink as people who THINK. I can't denounce those who drink macroswill as dumb; I can only question their sense of taste and wonder if they've ever really tried anything with more than 2 lbs. of malt per 5 gal. batch...

Okay, I'm a Yank and I have no idea whose tag-line that is. If it's the new Miller Lite line (whose new commercials I complained about under the News&Opinion area), it just goes to show how much of an impression it made on me!

And the bottled Guiness Draught is pretty good stuff too.

I still pour my "draught in a bottle" into a glass. Do it in 2 or 3 pours and it pours like a draught. Just can't drink Guinness out of a bottle. Something just seems wrong about it in my head. Maybe I need to see the swirl when drinking the stuff. Kinda goes hand in hand to me.

I might say yes, if I could get past the fact that it was Miller Lite they're pushing - an equally flavorless swill.
On the other hand, if it were a great brand that was being toted, I might find the commercials a little too pretentious - I'd expect something classier from a Sprecher, Goose Island - even Sam Adams, than angst filled idiots running screaming into the streets...but that's just me.

That is the ONLY way to drink good beer. Bottles are for storing and transporting beer; glasses or tankards are for drinking it. Would you drink vintage champagne from the bottle?
Leave bottle drinking to babies - including those babies who drink chemical fizz.
fretlessman71

The ONLY time I ever drink beer from the bottle is when I'm having a homebrew... I'll pour out most of the contents into my favorite glass, and take the last 3/4" or so and swirl it around to pick up as much yeast as I can and suck it down. Good B vitamins for you! (Also makes them easier to clean later.)

Well, I have to take this back just a bit. I just returned from one of my quarterly trips to Las Vegas and I did have to drink my beers from the bottle most of the time. John Cleese was an "eccentric" filmmaker getting his screenwriters opinion on an idea for a film...he fired one writer who liked the idea for being a "yes man", the next for disagreeing with him, the next guy says "yes, I mean no" and is promptly sacked for being indecisive.
The next panicked screenwriter, when pushed for his opinion ("5..4..3..2..!"), blurted out "Splunge!" which he explained meant: "It's a great idea, but possibly not, and I'm not being indecisive"....that was somehow met with approval.
The visuals of the sketch make it much funnier, trust me.

You're correct, we haven't, and I still like garters instead of sus-pen-dees! ;)

Wow.... sorry if I'm being a little pretentious but I equate that statement to someone telling me that Bud Light is the best beer ever made.
I'm going to assume you are talking about the mega-casino steakhouses and not some of the finer restaurants that aren't associated with the strip casinos.... next time you're there - give Ruth's Chris steakhouse (the one on Paradise - not Industrial) a try.

I have eaten at many of the finer restraunts in Vegas From Emeril's Delmonico to Bradley Ogdens. And while I think Circus Circus as a hotel and casino are really kind of dumpy and I would never consider staying there, the Steak House there is awesome. They age thier own beef on premisis. I believe if you ask any local they will tell you the same. I have had it recommended to me time and time again. As for Ruth's I have eaten at them all over the country from Maui to 4 of them right here in my area (Washington DC). I usually enjoy my meal at them and they are a fine chain as is Mortons. We also have Sam & Harry's here. The Steak House at Circus Circus is not a chain and is head and shoulders above any other that I have eaten at in Vegas. I stand by my recommendation. Now for lobster, I always eat at the Rosewood Grille. There is another good place called Michaels in another dump casino, The Barbarry Coast, That is excellent. For atmosphere go to the top of the Rio. Beautiful views as well as outstanding rack of lamb.

Interesting...back in the day the best steak house in Vegas used to be right next to the Circus Circus, and I'm talking like 1987....can't remember the name of it but it was all done up in whorehouse red and had a bunch of antique slot machines, roulette wheels etc as decor...unique in Vegas in that there was no gambling in there, it was just and simply a steak house.
Can't remember the name of it, but it was adjacent to the Circus Circus. Wonder if they bought it out and took it over and incorporated it into their property? If so, and if there's been a continuity of management, I could see it being better than a top echelon chain such as Ruth's Chris.
FWIW, a Vegas local I know always used to take us to the steak joint in the (shudder) Gold Coast, and swore by it...maybe I always caught it on a bad night but it was only average in my experience....

Just out of curiosity, have you been to the Ruth's on Paradise in LV? It is the best Ruth's I have been to. Granted, I have only been to Phoenix, LV Paradise, LV Industrial, and SF Ruth's, but the one on Paradise was definitely the best of them all.... curious if you've been there.

Nope I have not. But I will be back there in February and will check it out based on your recommendation. I agree that the consistancy in the Ruth's chain is a little up and down. While all of them are good some are definitely better than others. Have you been to the Steak House at Circus Circus? It is like a little enclave in the middle of an older, run down, past it's prime casino. An oasis. I would not have believed it until I went there. Gallaghers in NYNY is pretty good too. And I eat fairly regularly in my local Palm restraunt but have never eaten at the one in Forum shops at Ceasers. Have you tried Rosewood Grille? The new location is better than the old one that they were at for years.

In New York, Angelo & Maxie's is a great place. I've only been to the one on Park, but it was awesome. I think they have a store in DC, too...

Let me know what you think of it (LV Paradise).... helps if you are a cigar smoker (ever).... I'll be in LV in April/May for the World Series - I'll try the Circus Circus. I've been to their steakhouse in Reno.... wasn't bad per se....
BTW, I forgot to add Portland.... it was good too. The SF Ruth's had jumbo shrimp to go with their filet.... omfg it was good.... was prepared somewhat similar to lobster - in texture I guess (not sure how to describe it). If you ever go there - that is the dish to get - shrimp/filet combo..... mmmmmmmm

My local Ruth's here in Fairfax has an option to get any steak "Oscar" meaning it comes topped with crab meat. It is darned good too! I was only at Circus Circus in Reno a long time ago. I thought the whole town of Reno was kind of dumpy. The Circus, Circus casino in Las Vegas is dumpy too but you will be suprised at the Steakhouse there. They have the beef aging right there and it is a cozy wood paneled atmosphere. With superb food. Watch the horse radish though. It is very hot!
